A boy cycles past a wall of mock-up mobile phones displayed outside Wataden electronics store in Tokyo's Edogawa Ward on Thursday. The store owner started this display with a few thousand cell phones 10 years ago.

Quite original. Kudos to the owner for thinking up an authenic idea like that and for having the patience to collect all those phones.

now imagine how many end up in landfill each year

Hope they removed the batteries because if not that is a massive fire hazard :)

Hmmm, that picture somehow reminds of Wall of Voodoo's 'Mexican Radio' or a screen saver for 'The Matrix'. Either way my eyes are still paying for last night's drinkies.

What a great reminder of the waste we produce when we buy electronics we don't need! Why not also pile up collected air conditioners and old monitors? Not the wisest advertisement, as visually interesting as it may be.

Surely these are not 'mock-up mobile phones' but actual, discarded phones?

Anyone who has ever been to an electronics store would know about the mockup phones they have there. Each store gets one of each colour and model of phone as a mock up with the same weight and size/look as the real thing. With three main manufacturers releasing 8-10 models, twice a year, the wasted mockups would start piling up. Most of those phones look like they are from the early 90s, so thats 25 years 2 yearly releases 8 models * 3 makers = 1200 mockups. And that is just from one store.
