Visitors observe whale sharks and manta rays swimming at the Black Current sea tank at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Motobu, Okinawa, on Wednesday. The main tank, called Kuroshio Sea, holds 7,500 cubic meters of water and features an acrylic glass panel with a thickness of 60 centimeters, one of the largest such panels in the world.

Was just there on Saturday, couldn't get close to the tank with the mass of people there. Thought I had outsmarted the others by going after 4pm, but so did everyone else. then got caught in a traffic jam from hell trying to get back to Zampa!

Just like the picture shown here, it doesn't look real say friends when they look at the pictures we took while we were there in Okinawa. Of course, when we show them HD video shot with the same camera then are blown away by the shear size of the wall of water. I loved it and could not leave the area so I sat up in the back seating area and enjoyed it before heading back out into the heat.

I haven't been to this one, but I HAVE been to the Nagoya one, and that was impressive... if a little depressing to see dolphins and beluga in tanks... and the penguins in an indoor environment. Apart from that I love places like this...

One great things about Churaumi is the behind the scenes tour of the main tank that's available for free! Visitors get to walk around the top of the tank, and above the tank on the suspended walkway to see how everything is done behind the scenes. A real highlight.

That's some pretty incredible engineering.

People swim with whale sharks all the time. They're filter-feeders similar to baleen whales. Of course, if your point is the most dangerous animals are the ones standing there WATCHING them swim, then you're spot-on.

I have to agree with you, Fadamor. They don't eat people unless someone decides to swim into their mouth....

Discovery did a documentary on the building of Churaumi, it was interesting. You may be able to find it online.
