Spain’s FC Barcelona midfielder Lionel Messi holds the Golden Ball trophy for the best player during the award ceremony after the final match at the Club World Cup soccer tournament in Yokohama on Sunday night. Messi scored two goals as Barcelona beat Brazilian side Santos 4-0 to win its second Club World Cup title in three years.

The best part of the night was when Messi totally blew off the "presenters" (Sanma and his comedy crew) with a 15 second interview! I hate the way these sporting events are presented in Japan as "entertainment" to attract more viewers.

Bogi - totally agree. How embarrasssing for them and their slapstick. Messi looked like "wtf is this?"

But after watching that game, now I understand what true brilliance in soccer is.

The skills and the understanding displayed between the whole team - breathtaking.

    No Diving.

    No Faking.

    Offense is Attack.

    Defense is Attack.

Wow! And I'm not even a real soccer fan.

Messi was totally lost in translation. I bet he was not used to the Japanese comedy shows and preferred to run away. For everyone who didn't watch it, you can see what happened here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gf-mk6KnqWk

Btw, Barcelona is probably the best football/ soccer team on the planet ever. I doubt that even Brazil of '58 or '70 could beat it. Of course, the style of the game has changed a lot the last 10 years. It is much faster that it was used to be and tactics and formation is much more important.

Messi makes it look so easy. I'm sure Santos is a monster team to beat but Sunday Messi just dissected them.

The tragedy was that Sanma and his gang of slapstick morons just though Messi was in a bad mood. Messi, you were the voice of the many in Japan that detest this form of garbage TV. Good man.

Yeah, that Messi guy sure lulls his opponents to sleep with his short legs and moppy hair and. His acceleration with or without the ball is incredible. After his mini-interview, he was jogging back to his team at about half the speed that I walk... when I'm drunk. Then, look at the replays of him brushing aside Neymar and 3-4 other players like they're not even on the field for a beautiful pass. Or moving to the ball and skipping over the keeper for his second goal.

It doesn't hurt to have Xavi and crew on your side, though.

Great footballing display last night! It was a pleasure to watch. That you tube link is great. I had turned off the tele by then, but already prior to that incident I had been wondering who those jokers were, and why they were given so much air time, especially when they had other people such as Sawa San who I would have much preferred to hear from. I don't blame the comedians though. It is the show producers who should having a hard look at themselves this morning. Another low point was the J pop girls 20 minutes before kick off. Without wanting to sound like a hater, they were poor. If we must be subjected to J pop, then there must surely be better groups than that available on a Sunday night.

Nobody can beat the comedic relief of a kintama trophy!

Totally agree, Browny - my daughter made me watch it, but that third goal had me riveted to what I finally saw as the "beauty" in the game.

I assume you don't watch many major sporting events on J-TV then, because this is the norm.

I agree, that performance was terrible. But, again, filling these slots with artists that the major agencies are trying to promote, regardless of talent, is the norm.

The positive side is that it leaves enough time for toilet breaks and drink refills, AND, I hope you all noticed that there was ENGLISH commentary for the game, too!
