Participants carry a “mikoshi” shrine at a parade during the annual festival of the Yushima Tenjin shrine in Tokyo on Sunday. Hundreds of residents around the shrine participated in the traditional ritual parade to wish for their happiness and strengthening their unity.

I did that once and got a nasty shoulder wound from carrying the mikoshi for hours on end. Still have the scars.

I did that once and got a nasty backache. That's why they call it mikoshi, cuz when your back goes out you say "Oh, mi koshi, mi friggin koshi!" (Yeah, it's a recycled joke from yours truly)

I've lugged one of those around too, joining the locals in our annual matsuri. Fun, sweaty, noisy and painful! In the weeks preceding your local matsuri, check out the notices explaining where to go if you want to sign up. I wouldn't recommend doing it in Kichijouji though. Most of the mikoshi seem to have fat tatood yaks standing on them, waving their arms around like demented conductors. Fun to watch though!

Nice tats. Yakuza group of some sort? Looks like he's got all of his digits, however.

Given how drunk everyone was the one time I helped carry a mikoshi, I'm surprise you don't read about more property damage and fatalities during matsuri.
