After the Tianjin Explosions: Horror Caught on Film

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock this past week, you’ve seen the raw footage from last week’s chemical storage explosion in the Chinese port city of Tianjin. Over the course of the past seven days, there’s been a steady stream of information released. Asia News Weekly host Steve Miller sifts through and consolidates the data into the nuggets of information you need to know.

Fallout from Abe’s non-apology

Immediately following Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s speech on the anniversary of the 70th anniversary of WWII, the world voiced their opinion. While the White House welcomed the statement, Peter Kuznick, a history professor at American University, called Abe “notorious historical falsifier.” Miller dives into some of the key issues surrounding the speech and Seoul and Beijing’s response.

Should I worry about China's Market Volatility?

China’s got the world’s second largest economy. But even then, it’s only a little more than half of the United States’ GPD. According to CNN Money, the figures for 2015 put the Chinese economy at 11.2 trillion US dollars — way ahead of number three Japan, who comes in at just 4.2 trillion US dollars.

But things haven’t bee going all that well for Beijing. It’s markets took a dive, then China elected to devalue its currency. The dip in the key Chinese indices were felt across Asia, as was the yuan’s dip. But what does it mean? Returning to the podcast is Curtis S Chin, Asia Fellow with the Milken Institute to help unpack everything.
