World leaders prepare to arrive in Beijing for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation or APEC Summit taking place now though Tuesday, November 12th. The individual sessions might offer glimpses as to how the region plans to develop in the future, but what is possibly more important, will be the outcomes of the ancillary meetings between various world leaders and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Asia News Weekly host Steve Miller breaks does what may be in store for meetings with U.S. President Obama, Indonesia’s Joko Widodo, and the likelihood of a sideline meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

One item that may be on the docket at the APEC Summit is the resumption of six-party talks with North Korea. While that may be unlikely, given prerequisites imposed by the United States, it hasn’t stopped the DPRK from furthering its military ambitions. Miller speaks with Daniel Pinkston, Senior Analyst and North East Asia deputy project director for Crisis Group, about reports of a remodeled soviet submarine capable of striking distant targets.

The World Economic Forum recently issued its 2014 gender gap report. Saadia Zahidi, Senior Director for Gender Parity discusses this year’s results and what Asian nation landed in the top ten out of 141 nations.

With the exception of a small brawl in Mong Kok, the situation in Hong Kong has remained relatively quiet. It might be that leaders have been told to keep things that way while leaders are gathered in Beijing, but that doesn’t mean students feel the same. Yvonne Leung, a member of the Federation of Students shares what she feels needs to be the focus of the pro-democracy movement.
