Asia News Weekly Podcast -- Chinese cyber attacks on the U.S. and a lot more

This week on the Asia News Weekly Podcast, host Steve Miller speaks with RAND Corporation associate political scientist Scott Harold about recent cyber attacks in the United States made by the Chinese military. Harold breaks down three different kinds of electronic attacks and what a likely response might be from the U.S. after the TRANSCOM computers were repeatedly penetrated.

Miller then touches on several business updates from the region ranging from Chinese tech giant Alibaba debuting on the NYSE to what it might mean for Japan’s Softbank mobile carrier. The Korea Times’ Kim Yoo-chul also joins Miller to comment on Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 4 and what the company hopes to achieve with its Tizen operating system. Staying with Japan, Miller recounts a number of political overtures made by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to China and South Korea, as well as what he hopes to achieve at the United Nations.

Asia News Weekly then continues, taking a look at the political landscape across the region. Stories this week include updates on students protesting for universal suffrage in Hong Kong, a law student jailed in Malaysia for sedition, and Chinese Uighur scholar Ilham Tohti’s life sentence for separatism. During the Weekly Brief segment, Miller highlights several more stories from the Asia-Pacific region, including an update on a Chinese man who received revolutionary 3D skull replacement surgery.
