Has Japan Apologized Enough? Asia News Weekly Podcast

Seventy years ago tomorrow, we mark the end of the Second World War. This week, a special episode addressing some of the fall out that still remains.  Plus stories from the Koreas, Bangladesh, and more.

Japan has apologized enough: Right or Wrong?

It's a tune that hasn't changed much over the past few years, and one that has actually increased in tempo as we've neared the 70th anniversary of World War II - Japan must admit wrongdoing and apologize for its actions during the war.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he will stand by previous apologies and express remorse in his address marking the end of the great conflict that consumed the world in the 1940s, but will what the Prime Minister says be enough and what can we expect from Japan as it moves to be a bigger player in Asia?

To answer that, I spoke with Franz-Stefan Gady, Senior Fellow at the EastWest Institute.

Is China Trying to Reclaim Past Glory?

When it comes to the 70th anniversary of World War II, most have turned their attention to Japan and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. However, in recent years, China has steadily asserted itself, mirroring several tactics employed by Japan prior to 1941. In fact, the Milken Institute's Curtis S Chin even asked, is new China the old Japan?

So as we come upon this August 15th, what exactly are we seeing with China and what impact could Beijing's activities have on the region?

Scott Harold, Deputy Director, Center for Asia Pacific Policy at the RAND Corporation returns to discuss.

If repentance has to be with deeds worth of repentance, than apologies should also be accompanied with actions worth of regret.

"Based in South Korea..." This will not be good, living in Japan as I do.

@Peter Payne, After giving it a listen, what are your thoughts now?

Hell yeah they have. Put it behind you and learn to be peace lovers and prosper like Japan. No more excuses. It is over.

Come on, CHINA AND KOREA, get a life, don't live your grandfather's dream. Life is tough enough, why waste it on something that does not concern today's world. And Korea, your grandfather already collected war ransom, why are you asking for more. China, you were weak then, making Japan a punching bag for the western world. Why are you altering history, which doesn't benefit you. And USA, your president provoked Japan into war by sending nasty letters secretly without the consent of your congress. MOVE ON WORLD. LIVE AND LET LIVE. In Christ we Trust. Amen.
