Interview with author, columnist, lecturer Baye McNeil

5 Comments

In this interview we discuss the African-American experience in Japan with columnist, author, lecturer Baye McNeil. Here's a partial list of some of the questions he answered:

Is there racial discrimination in Japan? Do you feel safe in Japan? What are some of the benefits of living in Japan? Suggestions for people thinking about moving to Japan?

We also talk about the world of American politics, asking;

How is President Obama doing? Advice for POTUS? Thoughts about Republican candidate Dr. Ben Carson? Does Trump have a chance? Thoughts about candidates Hilary, Carson & Cruz?

Mr McNeil has a monthly column in the Japan Times newspaper called “Black Eye” and is also an author of two books - “Hi, My Name is Loco and I’m a Racist” and "Loco in Yokohama.” Additionally, he often goes to Waseda and Hosei Universities where he lectures on "hafu" and race issues.

Thoughts about Republican candidate Dr. Ben Carson?

Just curious why they ask specifically about Dr. Carson. Because he is Black? I found that when I was in Japan, the Japanese I knew assumed that I was a full Obama supporter because of my race, and when I explained to them we don't all think the same way and have a different opinion they couldn't believe it.

Excellent, excellent interview with this very insightful man. I especially liked his belief that people shouldn't primarily identify themselves as a particular nationality, but, rather, as a human. That kind of mentality leads to healthy relationships between people of any skin color. And to add on to his thoughts on people that wish to move to Japan, I believe that it is indeed very important to learn the native language of Japan or whichever country you wish to relocate to as it doing so demonstrates the respect you have for people's culture and your willingness to integrate. Not doing so, in my opinion, displays that you might be the kind of individual who, instead of integrating, would rather forcibly push your way of thinking and culture onto others, much like what is currently going on in Europe with the refugee situation.

He has some interesting observations in his columns, but an irritating writing style where he insists on dropping in slangy expressions every few lines. Looks a bit forced.

Entertaining and informative.

Especially liked his point/reluctance to be labeled. Many issues would be insignificant/ irrelevant if labels were not part of our mindset.
