Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in New York on Monday afternoon to attend the U.N. General Assembly meeting where he will deliver an address on Thursday.

In his speech, Abe is expected to outline Japan's foreign policy on dealing with the threat of the Islamic State, sanctions against Russia over Ukraine and Japan's contribution to fighting the Ebola epidemic.

During his six-day visit, Abe is also scheduled to address a conference on global warming and climate change, as well as deliver a speech at a summit on U.N. peacekeeping. The U.N. currently runs 16 peacekeeping operations, with more than 100,000 peacekeepers, including Japanese personnel.

The prime minister is expected to have a series of bilateral meetings with other world leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting.

What excuses will he make at the UN Climate Change conference for his government's abandoning all the promises made in Kyoto, for continuing to push the nuclear button, for not adequately shifting to an alternative energy strategy and for promoting the continued overconsumption of fossil fuels rather than encouraging energy conservation efforts, such as those taken after 3.11?
