Well, actually, the situation is a heck of alot better than 1929. There are now several groupings (example: APEC) that can isolate the problem to a degree. Combine that w/ other groupings economically, the problem can be alleviated, but not eliminated. It would take certain individuals who are exceptional in these groupings to work together, rising above individual political interests.

Japan can be a major player in this scenario, but would have to be able to see beyond conventional views - Japan may be too insular to see the solution.

Say goodbye to Toyota, Sony, and Hitachi ! Japan's export focused economy has just been blown out of the water. No one will be looking to buy these products anytime soon... except some chinese maybe !

Barfly -- Large, well-managed and well-financed companies such as Toyota will continue to exist. However, Toyota (along with Honda, Nissan and Mazda) may decide to close some factories in the US because of falling sales there. The time when each country manufactured all items needed or consumed in that country has long since passed. Some countries, such as Japan, that have demonstrated superior ability to design and manufacture certain types of items will continue to do so. Even if there is an economic crash and the worldwide markets for many items grow smaller or dry up completely, there always will be a demand for certain types of items, many of which are designed and/or manufactured in Japan. As demand from America declines, of course that will hurt Japanese companies that sell their products to America. However, that does not portend the complete collapse of the Japanese economy. Rather, it merely means that Japan will have to focus its marketing efforts on other countries, such as China, India and Brazil.
