Myanmar is at a strategic point on the EWEC. Japan nor other Asian nations can ignore it. Japan is just trying to enhance that route.

With a land mass as large as Britain and France combined, Myanmar lies in a strategic location, sharing borders with 40% of the world’s population in India, China, Bangladesh and Thailand. Chittagong Hill Tracts was historically part of Arakan state and Manipur state in India was in Burmese Konbaung Kingdom which Burma lost to British in first Anglo Burmese war. However, British given Manipur to India and Chittagong Hill Tracts to East Pakistan as their loyalty to British instead of given back to rightful owner Burma. Burma is best opportunity for Japanese Companies because there's no anti-Japan saga in Burma.

Aso reaffirmed Japan’s intention to waive part of the 500 billion yen ($5.74 billion) Myanmar owes it in debt

Aso or Abe think himself he is a Santa Claus. It was not a first time for Japan waiving bad loans of Myanmar. It is discouraging Myanmar to honour the debt obligation in the future. Money does not grow in the trees. Myanmar authority is so corrupted and spoiled for political interest.

A chunk of the 50 billion yen loan, which Japan hopes to implement by the end of March, is likely to mark the first tranche of its lending for infrastructure in Thilawa, which is to be developed by Japanese construction companies.

Infrastructure projects will take along time to get the return of the investment. Giving uncontrolled loans to Myanmar will be worse than giving cash to drunken sailor.

Japan's loans to are used to buy japanese products and services so that money already went back to Japan. New loans will be used by Myanmar again to buy services, technology, labor and goods from Japan. We will see many Toyotas there shortly.

Japanese products are late comers to Myanmar market. Until 1988, Japanese cars and electronic goods conquered Myanmar markets. Due to economic and trade sanction from 1988 to 2011, Korean and Chinese business have well established in Myanmar market. Korea pops and TV dramas, Cars and electronics are dominating Myanmar market. Besides that most of the Loans are for infrastructure projects. Heavy machinery will be imported from Japan. However it is unlikely Toyota or Honda or Mazada or Nissian will capture the slice of Myanmar market. Their brand images have been evaporated for a long time.
