A step in the right direction.

Yes Mr Aso do it. Then get collective defense ok'd. Then do something about article 9.

J can make a bigger and long standing contribution to the US, by take responsability for their own defense and replace all the american boots in J with japanese boots. Then the US have 50k american boots free for combat in Afganistan or Pakistan. After all, a few J soldiers protected by canadians or ausies dont really make much difference for the american soldiers in Afganistan.

I really like the pressure he is applying to other countries with this.

A step in the wrong direction. A SDF dispatch law would be a giant leap into turning Japan into a warfare state--or more of a warfare state. A militarized Japan will spell a reverse course to Hirohito / Tojo totalitarianism. It will mean Japan will be involved in endless wars and see its standard of living go down.
Aso has got to go, and go quickly.

jean, that is complete nonsense. Japan is a peace-loving country because of its people and institutions, not because of constitutional restraints.
Japan should ignore the scaremongering and do the right thing, which is trusting itself to make the correct calls over how and when to get involved in international conflicts. After all, if it won't help other countries now, why will they help Japan when it needs help?

Gee jeancolmar, you really put some thought into that one. I agree with Shumatsu Samurai. Japan needs to maturely debate the pros and cons of any kind of engagement like any other normal country.

That's the funniest thing I've read in quite some time.

To Jeancolmar:
You underestimate the degree of control the US exercises in Japan. For some Japan analysts, the US has been pushing Japan to rearm, drop Article 9, AND even accepts Japan develop intercontinental ballistic nuclear missiles - I did not know this until the late 1990's when US Agencies' personnel made the above very clear to me. Article 9 is going to be tough, because the majority of Japanese wants it, but it spoils the US "great game". Former PM Abe made the move against Article 9 obvious, and the results are self evident.
