I think former defense minister Yuriko Koike would be uniquely qualified to become the official govt. spokesperson because of her background as an TV anchorperson and her experience handling sensitive info in the Defense Ministry. If she can make a good showing in the polls and doesn't become LDP President, she would be someone who can make the PM more stylized than not. Interesting person to pop up during these times.

While I personally favor Ms Koike, I admit that Aso has the highest chances of becoming the next PM. As for his foot-in-the-mouth comments and hawkish views, I believe that China has come way too far in improving Sino-Japanese relations to let those efforts go to waste, even if Aso were to be the next PM.
