Seems like an unbinding Advance Election Manifesto (far from reality) !

How can he have a long time strategy? He only has 7% popularity, does he really think he will be around for ten years...

Can't say much about the man, but a strategy that focuses on renewable energy, affordable eco cars, etc is definitely key for Japan's success. The worldwide demand for these things is not going away.

a revolution to achieve a low-carbon economy, a society friendly to the elderly and a reinforcement of the nation’s strength in soft power

three nice ideas, but soft power is source of real growth, based on markets and supply and demand. The two are politically minded government programs. Good luck on the soft on demand, er, soft power.

Good luck with all of these. Japan got great because it was in the right place at the right time and because it has drones who are prepared to work long hours at repetitive jobs without being adequately rewarded (or at least not to levels workers require in other developed economies). all this stuff requires social flexibility, creativity, initiative etc. They may invent some new stuff, but as long as domestic market is not big enough to consume it all, export reliance will remain.

Agree with some14some, this sounds like a speech to win an election... And yet more debt??

I don't buy into this plan. And maybe he should try to get elected and have a public mandate to be PM.

Wakarimasen: You are spot on. They are trying to work out what to do as they have no idea what they are suppossed to do and keep throwing pork barrel ideas up in the air. Here is one idea that I would guess that most of the readers on this site don't know. According to information that I had of about 6 years ago (It definately hasn't changed much since for sure) Approximately 40%-50% of all households in Japan weren't connected up to the sewerage system. That means that they still have specialty trucks. ( I call them a different name) still driving around collecting crap from households. Those 1 story dilapidated houses that you see are usually the places that aren't hooked up. I live in Tokyo and even within Tokyo there are many houses that are still not connected. Yet they want to build roads to nowhere for political gain. Why don't they want to consider this basic? Because the people that live in these places don't vote?

Prime Minister Taro Aso's new growth strategy has large potential. It would promote a progressive development increasing the efficiency of solar panels which could be incorporated into electric cars. Soft power could be enhanced w/ new translation software to translate the more popular magazine subscriptions on the internet (multilingual). The frosting on the cake would be a comprehensive network of tracks in the ASEAN Region for the Shinkansen where a surge of individual country's labor force would be engaged and reduced time/energy in mass transport -Japan and others could provide seed money for the mega project. Lot of potential/lot of negotiations, and the scale could alleviate the economic downturn now gripping the region.

These are interesting times we live in.
