Aso also said he wants to raise the consumption tax in three years’ time after the economy recovers, in a bid to cover snowballing social security costs in rapidly aging Japan.

They are all fools!!!!!!! The gov't should be cutting back on spending and leaving the people alone.

Great! Cheaper highway tolls on holidays will only make for more traffic jams and CO2 omissions. These guys have got their heads up a dark tunnel.

If somebody can convince Hotels not to charge per person, then people can be motivated to go on trips using highways with tolls. Real state agencies also need to cut on those agent and appreciation fees. In the States, the housing agencies give you free rent for a month or two to get you in. Here it is pure gree.

Lets see... he is going to raise taxes to spread the wealth? Sounds great! He should run for president in a big country near us.

Samuriaiiki, Renting property in Japan is a dead loss unless it is in the major business areas. Lots of older flats have been knocked down and turned into car parks as a car park may turn a profit. Rental houses don't return enough to rebuild the property when it has to be knocked down especially in snow areas where building life is 25-30 years. Lots of people living in flats are being subsidised by the owners who will be lucky to even keep the cash value they started with. "Greed" with declining property values property owners will lose money even if they sell. Japan is floating on the wealth stored by the older generation, the neo-conservatives have neglected the infrastructure that older Japanese worked hard and long to build. The younger Japanese do not have the will to work hard, they are unable to put the nation first because they can see how their parents have been exploited. They can see that Japanese are no longer equal as workers and how no government in over 15 years has looked any further than at creating more profit for the rich. Aso in giving out spending money is not going to help any one to keep their jobs except the big importers. This is old policy when Japanese only bought "Made in Japan" now you are lucky if you can find any thing made in Japan to buy. In the "States" they have not only made a mess of their own economy their have stuffed up the world economy and your suggesting applying their methods in Japan and call Japanese "GREEDY".

At first I did not like Mr.Aso very much, but I do have have to drive my car every week on the toll ways in and around Tokyo, so this maximum 1,000 yen fee to me sounds like a god send! If you do not drive, well this may not make much sense, but for the rest of us who do not live any subway station etc..we really have no choice. Arigato Aso san!
