When a politician's on the stump, he can be counted on to pander shamelessly to the voters. Nuff said.

  • soldave at 09:23 AM JST - 8th September

noborito - You say back onto that list. When was the last time it was on the list? If it was I am thinking it must have been some time just after the end of WWII.

Smoke and mirrors from Abe. A ploy to gain support and only a ploy to gain support.

  • helloklitty at 09:38 AM JST - 8th September

I believe in raising the consumption tax.

Me too. It's unavoidable. Finally, we'll get rich people to pay up. Plus, think how many needless things you will stop buying. Get clutter out of your life. Live simply.

Of course, I expect to the income tax to be simultaneously lowered until it reaches zero. No need for that, right?

Let's get Japan back into the 3rd world poor countries list.

    Tautological. Unlikely.

Is the consumption tax system in need of an overhaul? I would think wiping out the corruption and bribes would be a more pertinent way of saving the country billions of yen.

  • GW at 11:08 AM JST - 8th September

like serindipity says, cut kick backs, bribes, dango, slush funds etc etc & there wud be trillions upon trillions of yen laying around & nothing to do with it.

My guy tells me every ministry cud VERY easily do with 15%less of what they steal each year & a few like construction & foreign ministry, ministry of finance you cud add another 5-8% onto the 15%

but yeah like that wud ever happen.

We are already paying more than enough for what we need its just we are not getting much value from politicians & bureaucrates in rtn the greedy, selfish SOBs

he can say anything he likes but he has no accountability. after all he is elected by his LDP cronies...

  • LIBERTAS at 03:16 PM JST - 8th September

What Aso means is no tax-hike before the LDP wins another general election.

  • Statistician at 03:32 PM JST - 8th September

Well, that won't be before the LDP lose the next election then.

  • dennis0bauer at 04:00 PM JST - 8th September

Aso only said not to raise the consumption tax, so he can raise other taxes to compensate

  • usaexpat at 11:54 PM JST - 8th September

Aso is right on this one, with the economy floundering you can't raise taxes.

  • Sarge at 12:01 AM JST - 9th September

usaexpat - The economy is floundering? Not around my neighborhood, where there s construction of new buildings everywhere I look.

  • usaexpat at 12:24 AM JST - 9th September

Sarge, maybe I have a warped view because Nagasaki has never recovered from the bursting of the bubble. I'll give you that when I am in Fukuoka or Osaka I see the construction, cars, and bling that makes it look like happy days are here again. The point is Japan's economy has been essentially flat for nearly 15 years and recently people are hurting from the global slowdown. Things are bad back home and a lot of Japan's business relies on selling things in the US.

There are quite a few new office buildings and shops where I am as well. The problem is that no one is moving into them.
