why should Japan shoulder the burden from a mess that was created by the U.S. in the first place? we are not a slave.

I think that is Juninchiro how reformed the banks in J and the Chinese new market what ended the recession in J. Until that happened, LDP measures only keeped J in intensive care, not alive, not dead. I dont think that I dont heard that he have a proposal for reform the banks or an idea for make contries trade more in place of less. I dont know... something like a new international currrency holded by the IMF for avoid speculation in international trade. Offer more money is lead only in contribution.

Can you imagine if all the banks in the world adopt the Japanese system? You will have to wait for hours with a piece of paper in your hand to see a Teller. Then sit down again while it gets processed. Not to mention the long wait at ATMs while old ladies with 50 bank books in their hand shuffle their money around. There would be riots.

Thats a good one. After decades of following the Japanese are going to take the lead in something, what a joke. The Japanese don't do anything until its already been done, then turn around and say Hey look what we did!.

Japanese politicians have not led on the international stage for decades. As another poster stated, they merely maintain the status quo ... and with this mode of operation eventually fall behind.

So the idea of a dyed-in-the-wool career Japanese politician like Aso actually 'leading' on anything of any significance outside (or inside) Japan is basically laughable.

In any case, Mr. Aso will not be PM this time next year. And by the way, 'PM' should be changed to 'PC' ... for Prime Caretaker, as caretaker is closest in meaning to the role these geriatric, right-wing, status-quo at all costs guys take on when assuming the Japan 'top job'.

“I would like to proceed with our action to help strengthen financial cooperation in Asia and support self-reliant development of the region,” Aso said.

Are we sure this is what he meant to say? Maybe he read his speech wrong.

HAhahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!! This reminds me of the chest thumping after that big wave smashed Indonesia. Germany,Australia and Japan were trying to trump each other's aid packages. Meanwhile America was delivering tons of food and mediale supplies to villages. The 700 billion dollar aid package has been established and banks are just starting to use it.

japan to take lead? How? Why? Sorry, it's the new world orders, girls and boys. pffttt, japan as a 'leading' nation? Yeah, but we all know how the asian co-prosperity sphere worked out....

  • WMD at 06:04 PM JST - 17th November

Japan as leader??? Ha ha ha, joke of the century!

  • apecNetworks at 06:31 PM JST - 17th November

We'll see if PM Aso has the best solution to the current problems. APEC is a week away, and it will be obvious if he understands the dynamics involved in APEC, does he have the influence thereof, and can he obtain a consensus? Crunch time is coming w/ a slew of multilateral forums in the Asia-Pacific. Time will tell.

sorry to burst yr bubble but the only thing Aso is trying to is the following:

    1. buy votes for the next election in Jpn

    2. buy off the world & try to get a stool with the rest of the permanent members

He is not trying to do anything about the world economy, sorry thats just the way it is

  • usaexpat at 01:12 AM JST - 18th November

I'm sure he does but since the government is broke it's nothing than a wish.

  • Simon_Foston at 06:01 PM JST - 18th November

Someone who thinks that whole neighbourhoods filled with mom and pop shops are still financially viable has no business telling the rest of the world how to fix the global economy.
