Just cancel it all together. After all what is the point? These guys will only do what big business wants. So no movement on anything that will cut into profits or slow economies. Even if it means wrecking the planet in the process.

If we want change, people like us need to become active in demanding it. Otherwise the summits will continue to screw the poor and and planet with what little they do achieve, and will continue to neglect what really needs to be done to save the planet and plan for the future.

The G-8 should just go cap-in-hand and ask if they can join the "Bilderberger" conference; after all, that is where the real global policy is discussed, argued, and made...

I wonder to see japanese media being very conservative to publise the news. Either you fo USA, UK or even in India, media is really powerful there. they publised each and evry events so beautifully and publise all related news. However, I am surprised to see that during G8 summit, japanese media was busy with BUSH and Yashuda.. Neither they gave much attention to UK, Canada, India, China, nor to Korea too. They even didnt publise photosof PM of india and china.. I got max news on G( by reading indian newspaper

It has to happen and will happen sooner than G-8 might have anticipated. And it will begin by people in "advanced countries" unlike in past when such movements used to take place from poor countries.

bet they won't want it scrapped until after the next one, in Florence

buried in Article 58 in more than 11000 words of text agreed to by the G-8 leaders was ONE LINE urging North Korea to address areas of concern "such as the abduction issue"...Nikkei called the inclusion "a major diplomatic win for japan"

and THAT'S how the local media are treating it

I agree - this resulted in a bunch of people standing around looking awkward, sayine "we must think hard about the environment", after flying around the world with hundreds of security personnel and personal chefs. And their wives, who had to look impressed at exciting things like markets.

Scrap it. A waste of time.

I don't think this G-8 will ever die,it will ONLY get bigger.Politicians always want to ENJOY maximum of their status while they are in governments.People(tax payers )can't do a thing about this;you elect another one and they will do exact the same...meetings,summits,first class travels,5 star hotel.etc...they just love it.

Could you please provide an example of where a movement for change, of the type agreed upon by the G8 or it's predecessors, was ever implemented by the poor countries, rather than the advanced countries?

The daily yomiuri has been spewing bigtime, if it was the only source for what happened one wud think it was a massive success & Jpn put its STAMP on getting everything done its incredibly lame, I mean they spout about the huge achievement of just a few people together to discuss certain issues, its pathetic.

Glad the brit media has the nads to say it like it is

At last some sense about the pointless, meaningless farce that was the recent Hokkaido G8 meeting. It is nothing more than a rich man`s club, of has-been and never-were politicans. Abolish it - its not worth the paper its printed on. Oh - and perhaps we culd aboliosh that other non-entity as well - the UN.

  • xrc at 05:38 PM JST - 12th July

Bet they were served some excellent uni and threw it away. They could've given it to me, a hungry American in Kanagawa. And all the elite super hero dignitaries wouldn't even sleep on tatami matts...very open and cultural indeed.

    china need't join G-8.

  • RepublicofTexas at 09:29 PM JST - 13th July

‘The G-8’s problem is that it has become so divided and poorly led that its annual summits have deteriorated into little more than photo opportunities and exercises in drafting bland communiques,’’ an editorial stated. Instead, the newspaper suggests forming a G-12 comprising the largest economies—the existing G-8 plus China, India, Brazil and Spain.

And adding these countries wont further divide the group? Why Spain? That is a very un-influential country in world politics, that last time Spain was influential was 1600s. It's a nice country but please...
