Prime Minister Taro Aso had insisted that the sales tax should be raised as early as in fiscal 2011
He can insist all he wants but to the public who already by and large don't like the man this will be another nail in his political coffin.
Having said that my wife recently said how much she dislike the current government so I asked her if she will vote for the other side at the next election - NO! Apparently she hates the man in charge of the other side...
Oh well, we all know politics in this country is not rational
The say that in politics a week is an eternity - and they're planning two years ahead? If they had any idea what state the economy is going to be in then, fine - but I can't help feeling waving a sword of Damocles tax hike over the economy is going to be very helpful.
Boost the economy, ensure that people and companies are earning, and tax revenues will rise naturally.
Raising taxes to pay for government programs/jobs, too bad no one has looked beyond the short term effects. The gov takes this capital from others(through taxation, inflation, debt) and then decides how to spend it. So why does the consumption tax need to be raised? So the government can continue to fund its programs that cause other jobs to be lost that never came into existence in some other part of the economy since the government decreed that IT ALONE decides it needs more for its overbearing debt/spending/job & production destruction that comes from central planning(government healthcare, national pension).
Its only a matter of time that we see the full effects of the Japanese government on the economy(even right now it is visible unless your blind).
Well LDP may go ahead and increase consumption tax as and when they like to. But, it is time for the govt. to raise taxes for the businesses who have already consumed the consumers. Who are the consumers? workers in general and what is their standing now?

I refer you to what I wrote above:

What you fail to realize is consumption tax is a tax on the businesses/producers you just are only looking at what is right in front of you, instead of down the street for example. Now the businesses/producers have to include the cost increase into the products/services. All taxes are taxes on production you are only fooled into believing that a consumption tax is only on consuming. Now going a bit further into it is that a consumption(Production/Producer) Tax his costs are raised by taxes(look at the bigger picture) so now the costs have to be reduced in other areas like reducing labor(WORK), or quality, or reducing capital expenditure (Future Investments that actually make more money, THE BIGGER PICTURE), etc etc.
It is a lie that consumption can be taxed. Only wealth, income, and productivity can be taxed in short.
The act of raising consumption tax in a recession goes against any common sense, and shows that Prime Minister Aho is completely out of touch with reality, or lacks the education to make such decisions.
Raising the consumption tax is not the present PM's idea. The issue has come up time and again under the reign of other cabinets. The need for more government income is there, as has been stated repeatedly: an aging population. But I myself still disagree with any such incentive as in this nation there is an ongoing huge waste of money in government, in industry, in services, in traffic, in logistics, in distribution. The easy way out looks like raising taxes, which will be political and economic suicide.

Hopefully by 2011 this shower of dinosaurs will no longer be in power and the raise in Consumption Tax will never happen.

How is it irrational to refuse to vote for the main opposition party if your wife doesn't like its leader?

Yes, but previous governments were also LDP dinosaurs without brains.
