I'll take that with a pinch of salt, and people in the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei will be choking over their breakfast. China just unilaterally declared new borders and ordered those countries to ask for permission to enter these waters....and believes prospects are BRIGHT???

Therein lies proof that China believes might is right.

While China constantly amuses the word with some pretty ridiculous statements, this time I have to say they've taken the cake this time. First off it's the other countries in Southeast Asia that are threatened by China Why would China with it's giant military and nuclear weapons be "threatened" by Southeast Asian countries? Secondly how can Japan be "spreading rumors" when the Chinese Foreign Ministry declared back in November 2013 that China intends to establish an ADIZ over the South China Sea?

"China Says" , every morning we here that China says something, usually something dumb, out of touch with reality, and anti Japanese, hopefully one morning we can wake up to the headline that says China says nothing and is Quiet.

China is content with banging on and on about Japan, it is becoming a hollow drum with no substance and pretty soon people will not even hear it.

I wonder if China leaked false information to the Japanese, so they could accuse them of causing troubles when the Japanese reported on it. Seems like something they would do.

That's the problem when you don't understand Chinese or intentionally focus on the wrong issue. What they meant was there is no need for ADIZ as they are not threatened by SEA nations. Of course it is a different issue from the one declared last year because in that case a hostile nation declared an ADIZ stretching all the way to nearby China shores. Interpret what you like, but we all know the real issues!

Yesterday afternoon, walking in Shinjuku between Alta Building and Isetan, I heard Chines being spoken all along the street. Also, in the basement of Isetan food shopping. I'm glad the Chinese don't listen to their government. I've been assured by Chinese friends that nobody in China pays attention to what the government says.

I certainly hope that is true. Probably not the best resource, but I read the Chinese netizen comments on ChinaSmack to see what they are saying. There's some scary stuff which may or may not be from the 50 Cent party but there also seems some people thinking for themselves and questioning the government's nonsense. I guess normal people in both countries just want to go about their lives without worrying about an impending war.

Saw some Chinese speaking tourists the other day in Kobe. No idea if they were from the Mainland, Taiwan or elsewhere but was very impressed that they graciously offered their train seats to some elderly passengers. Common sense and courtesy may not be common in frequency, but is common in that it is a concept that we all share, regardless of where we're from.

With your laughable air force and navy, you should be very threatened, considering that not only Japan but the US as well would not respond kindly to another ADIZ in disputed territory. Both countries have vastly superior air force and navy than China. Try to bear that in mind before running your mouth about how "optimistic" you are of the situation in the SCS. If you provoke military action from the US and Japan, you will be defeated.

This is how China plans on improving relations? If you are so intent on improving ties, why not accept Abe's repeated calls for a summit? Why do you insist upon taking aggressive and provocational actions? Why do you flex your military muscles at every opportunity? Why do you try to dictates what other countries can and can't do? The only country in the region China has good relations with is North Korea. 'Nuff said.

Nobody would criticize the ADIZ if they were actually established within international practice, and not unilaterally declared over disputed islands and the airspace of other countries. Are you referring to Japan's plans to increase its defensive capabilities in response to China's increasingly hostile and expansionist actions? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones China. If you weren't trying to take over the ECS and SCS, Japan wouldn't need to bolster its defensive capabilties. You brought this on yourself. But you only complain because it's going to be harder to earn victory in capturing the Senkaku islands (among many others) by force if Japan bolsters its defence. Not that it was easy to begin with.

China is not transparent on spending- so it is a real ballpark on how much is spent on the military- Japan is scrupulously honest so a little percentile is viewed by China as Right wing extremism.

China sets up an identification zone inside Japan Territorial waters, and if allowed would give China the ability to curtail all flights out of Okinawa

China also sends out ships and planes into the same area- but Japan is called extremist and paranoid for sending ships to protect it's interest

Actually most of Chinese don't regard this issue the way you expect! Although it's true that most of Chinese don't like China commie government, however they did like the hard line actions China government did against Japan Abe gov. for disputed islets. And on the contrary, Chinese would be very mad if China gov reacts softly to JP for this issue!. The real problem today is that both of Chinese and Japanese request their leaders to be hardliners and it's easy understandably you just read how posters react here in JAPANTODAY as well as some China websites where readers react even more stronger! So 'hype' opinions from both sides are really irresponsible.

The ASEAN nations are scared for good reason. China has a history of strong arm tactics and double speak against other countries and against its own citizens.

A new ADIZ was being proposed by China's air force to cover ASEAN territory as another psuedo-claim to territory. So, it is reasonable to report these kinds of proposals before they become a fact, at which point it is impossible to get China to backtrack since they would . . . lose face.

There is no double about Chinese regime’s claim in South China Sea is real and persistent, let alone armed and dangerous, but, technically speaking, the regime is not ready yet in terms of its military might and economic clout. More importantly, the US has forewarned China what will be American follow-up reactions and responses if ADIZ is declared there, given American absolute vital interests in that body of water.

That being said, Japan’s foreign policy should find a new focus instead of orbing around China as the center with frayed tactics of containment or feebleminded alliance-building.

Here may be what American foreign policy in Asia may look like ahead based on Obama's State of the Union address last Tue: American pivot to Asia will still be chugging along, but losing some steam on the way. In Obama speech, neither North Korea, one of the usual threats, nor Japan, a long-term ally was mentioned. Such shift may provide some fresh indicators for the upcoming change of American Asia policy.

In the meantime, Japan may need to watch closely the relationship between Israel and the US amid Kerry’s mission to end the Israel-Palestinian conflict. During the weekend, Kerry said “Today’s status quo absolutely, to a certainty, I promise you 100 percent, cannot be maintained. It’s not sustainable. It’s illusionary.”

If it could happen to Israel, then it could occur somewhere else.

As I've already said, they can have an ADIZ. The problems everyone has with China's ADIZ is that it was unilaterally declared, it goes against international practice, it was declared over disputed territory, and that it overlaps Korean and Taiwanese airspace. If they didn't do all of that, no-one would have any issue with China's ADIZ.

If Japan had sat down to negotiate with China over the Diaoyu islands, this ADIZ would likely have never been put in place. What do you do when someone persistently and stubbornly refuses to listen to you? You get their attention

It is quite possibly that the ADIZ has very little to do with the Senkakus. Should japan give up the Senkakus the Chinese ADIZ will be extended much further, possibly up to or even over Okinawa. That said the ADIZ is not about the Senkakus but about establishing air control over as much space as possible. This chess game has much more to do with the US presence and early warning systems as a preparation to the coming big fight.

China always blames Japan as they totally use aggression in and around the whole region... Crazy for anyone to believe their words and take any of their rhetoric seriously!
