    1. As a Korea, You're absolutely right that South Korea should help North Korea. In addition to South Korea, it is not refutable that the Japanese government has certain responsibilities for the North Korean issue since it is a direct part of security beneficiaries by the resolutions of 6-party talks.

    2. There is another reason why the Japanese government is urged to aid North Korea at this moment. The present South Korean government was launched in the strong support by the Extreme Korean Cons. who are called Japanese collaborators and their descendants. The Koreans Cons. cut off the "Sunshin Policy" which were the main foreign policy toward North Korea for the last 8 years. Accordingly, the US and China have to embrace more burden to cover the costs to de-nuclearize North Korea.

    3. The essential logic of the 6 party talks is "other 5 parties will compensate all the costs of the energy that the North Korean government is attempting to produce by the "Nuclear Reactors".

At least the abductions have some relebance in that NKorea are the ones who did the abducting. And if you think THIS has nothing to do with the 6-party talks, you should catch the latest news- South Korea is trying to tie the silly Takeshima/Dokdo issueto the 6-party talks.

  • bibric at 09:32 PM JST - 18th July

    >OssanULTRA If it is true that South Korea is attempting to tie the Takeshima issue to the 6 party talks, it is really silly!!!!! In fact, I do not have any hope that the current Extreme Cons South Korean government can do something for the good to the International Community or Domestic society.

I think China can provide the aid all alone. It is after all China's assistance that created North Korea during the Korean war and has propped up Kim and his father for the last 50 years. The only way refusing to aid NK can harm Japan's reputation is with North Korean sympathizers or the Americans eager to have Bush leave office having accomplished something. Japan's refusal to waste its taxpayer's money on aid to Kim Jong Il plays quite well here and quite well with me as well.

    1. In fact, I agree that China has some part of responsibilities for the presence of North Korea in the current status. Based on this logic, Japan may not help N Korea. It might be realistic in terms of cost-benefit calculation.

    2. Yet, Japan may consider the reverse case that Japan does not help North Korea. The very important criterion of the government-decision making process is to reinforce its own power to influence other parties' policy with the minimal resources. In some sense, if Japan does not show some considerable level of assistance to North Korea, Japan may lose its power to influence North Korean policy over other issues such as "diplomatic normalization talks", Japanese abduction issue, and other economic cooperations issue, etc.

    3. Sometimes, a state must take a hard-line position, displaying a strong will to fight. Yet, the final decision will be made by your people's preference.

I disagree. Those are bilateral issues which, even if nudged on by the 6-party talks, still needs to be settled between Japan and NKorea. If Japan were to give-in and simply contribute aid at this stage with no strings attached, it would lose all negotiationg leverage on the bilateral level.

"South Korea could stop cooperating with Japan in six-party talks on denuclearizing North Korea if their territorial dispute worsens, Seoul's ambassador to Tokyo Kwon Chul Hyun warned yesterday."

    1. For the first response, well, let's think about it.

    2. Just before, I read the news in Korean since the news was really shocking to me. I'm quite critical on the Korean government's position. It's really an overreaction, as most conservative governments do. Some Korean conservative groups are holding ridiculous rallies against Japan with not suggestion of any reasonable alternatives. Politics! Let's see tomorrow's news. In fact, the South Korean government does not have any consistent policy on this issue. It would be really thankful to PM Fukuda for politicizing it at this very moment.

"It would be really thankful to PM Fukuda for politicizing it at this very moment"

I presume you mean "for NOT politicizing it". I don't think there is any worry about that, as Japan has taken a very cool headed attitude about all this, after all, they are within their rights to decide what goes into their own textbooks. And that is all they've done. If someone wants to yell, scream, kill and throw birds or set themselves on fire or declare war or whatever outside, that's their business.

    1. Well, international politics is not like simple or clear in terms of sovereignty or self-determination.

    2. I mean there is always "conspiracy" between Cons. in Japan, in South Korea, and the US.

I dom't think China want to provide the aid all alone. the reason why China assisted Nkorea during Korea war is 80% protected himself by keeping a "buffer" and only 20% for friendship and reputation... in my openion. Anybody will attack China today ? and also I don't think the US want to really take action in eastern Asia continent any more. Maybe because of old friendship China will provide some food if Nkorea is under seriously starvind situation. but no way for energy ! It's not Mao China's leader anymore, new generation China leader think about economic first. However, I think Korea today may need a leader like Mao or Stalin, in democratic style, to stir up people doing what they should do.

I am with you usaexspat. North Korea shows no signs of friendliness towards anyone. Their military is lead by hatred towards others. So why should anyone bend over backwards to try and win them over? This is the same with the CCP, they are only after one thing, power and will do and say anything to get to that point. North Korea will take anything anyone will give it and give nothing in return as we have seen.. How do you become friends with someone that does not like you? China is two faced, friendly when taking you to the cleaners, and so may politicians are so blind that they are easily taken in, but at the same time China takes all our investments and profits to build a military straight towards us. This is the same with North korea, all are threat to them just as China sees everyone, but shakes hands and bows with a smile to those feeding it the economics to build its military expansion. North Korea is China's extended hand, so let their out pced economy take care of their satelite commie friends and partners.

China's foreign minister is applying pressure in the wrong place. They need to lean on North Korea and get that regime in line. What's he talking about? Relations between Japan and Pyongyang? There aren't any really.
