In a nutshell, China doesn't want the United States supporting it's weaker smaller neighbors because it interfere's with their agenda of threatening and intimidating them with greater military power. At this point they might as well as just come out and say it. What China fails to realize is that the United States historically has supported weaker nations agaimast more powerful aggressors, this despite the fact that the US supported China (ROC) in WWII. China also fails to realize that the United States has also historically never allowed any one militarily aggressive power dominate a region.

Sounds like another intimidation from Beijing to me.

Chinese Diplomacy is:

Threat

Intimidation

Blackmail

Lie

Agitation

Anger

Rage

No listening -one side story telling

Did I miss anything else, folks?

After learning that the US may support China in the territorial disputes, the Communist party friendly warned the US against taking sides, as it might further deteriorate Chinese relationships with her stubborn neighbors...

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

China and the USA are 2 very similar countries, both pray to the almighty $$$$, this is what drives both countries at the end of the day, so on the surface they bicker about these puny islands but deep down inside, my guess is that the USA knows they need the cheap Chinese labor and the Chinese know that we are addicted to cheap goods Made in China from Walmart, Target, Kmart, etc...it is a win win $ituation??

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

I told you folks such - China doesn't want the U.S. in the neighborhood, and China especially doesn't want the U.S. getting real chummy with Myanmar, which is basically a Chinese territory, along with N. Korea. Myanmar is China's land route lifeline to the Indian Ocean and the Middle East

China = barking dog = all bark, no bite, and then the whining comes later

And China is no longer the main place to utilize cheap labor - and China very well knows this

@Elbuda, are you against getting rich?

Mrs Clinto has already showed her intention. Obama can't stop her. For reason unknown.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Stupid statement. US has treaty obligations that force it to take sides if China starts acting up.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

A lot of push and shove is expected from both sides. But we only need to remember it is all about the money, sorry "national interests". But the US and China, although they may appear completely different are bascially the same. Run by a small elite and focussed on what makes money.

That said, I think the US is the better side as it is more transparent and has people of all races and greeds, were as China (well 93%) is basically ethic Han.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

"We hope the U.S. side will uphold the wider interests of peace and stability..." said foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a briefing.

Hey, so long as nobody starts showing up with warships!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And given how much the US needs China economically now as opposed to Japan, they'll listen.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

U.S. (executive branch) decided during the 60's that they will not take a stand on territorial disputes.

But notice how they call them "Senkaky" instead of "Dayou". Or how they refer "Liancourt" as opposed to "Takeshima/Dokdo".

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

nigelboy: "Or how they refer "Liancourt" as opposed to "Takeshima/Dokdo"."

Seems a pretty neutral stance to me.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The island disputes are getting interesting.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The thing is, the US has mostly tried to stay out of it...

Some US personnel publicly declared that the islands are within defense perimeter

It reported a Japanese government guideline dictates that it can open fire at protesters.

US accused China of being 'more aggressive' in south china see. All chinese navy did was 'ship bumping'. That's kind of activity most loved by Japanese government, which is going for decades and never accused. Double standard applies.
-4 ( +1 / -5 )

I think its actually the opposite, lets all gang up on China since their not taht strong yet and take as much as possible. Replay of history when the 8 nations plundered China.... The Americans say go to multilateral talks, peace, no threat, no violence, blah blah blah but the American's themselves use violent, intimidation and cohersion. (Middle East ring a bell)

This has to be a new dawn of the century, but this one of the rarest occasions where I have to agree 110% with Global. China has some nerve trying to tell the US not to take any sides, which means, if anything happens to Japan (military wise) we would just turn our heads and look the other way. Yes, China is growing more powerful, yes, China is becoming a global super power and yes, they are out of their minds if they think that the US is going to jump when they snap their fingers. Everyone wants a peaceful solution to this mess and it is a mess, but fear, intimidation, threat and bullying will get China nowhere. Country is getting bigger, badder, bolder, too big for its britches!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

“trying to alienate China from countries around the South China Sea”.

China is doing very well alienating these countries all be itself, thank you.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

Just Ship bumping

Sure, Chinese is aggressive in South China sea.

But, Japan has been ship bumping for decades. From time to time, you see reports that fishing boats are bumped by Japanese coast guard.

If using same standard, Japanese are aggressive too.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Farmboy

I guess Chinese navy has already noticed that US has much, much bigger boats. They are really, really scared. They don't want US to get too close. That is why there is a warning. When a lion meets another, both show their teeth, then turn away with their own business.

You don't want to lose your good life. Neither do I, through US-Japan alliance, through US-ANZ alliance, just because of these stupid fanfares.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

China is doing very well alienating these countries all be itself, thank you.

Japan has alienated all neighbors. The only one it has not yet is on the other side of Pacific.

Yet another similarity between Japan and China.

I believe Japan and China are very close and similar. Even though Japan is mentored by God send American, and China falls in the devious camp of communist. They both pretend to be peaceful yet they are aggressive. They both try to occupy moral high ground and accuse each other, yet they both are interest driven. They both pretend to defend their 'divine' homeland, but actually land grab from other country.

Based on these behavioral observation, I believe Japan and China are brothers - bad and worse. On bad scale of 0-100, big brother China score 99 and Japan 98. China lose 1 point because it make its own people richer in recent years. Japan lose 2 point because it is richest in the whole world and it has half baked democracy.

Long live Japan, long live China, and long live brotherhood.

I can see it now. War in the Pacific. Nobody believe there would be a war in Europe in the early 1990's...now imagine what all this could escalate into. Time to cool jets here. Just sayin'!

I doubt that we will see a full scale war in the region. There is so much interdependence between the economies of East Asia (Japan , S. Korea, China, Taiwan), that any such decision will be proved catastrophic for all of them. I don't think that either Japan or China are stupid enough to do such a thing. They just don't want to lose face and China is flexing its muscles trying improve its position in the global status quo.

Plus, we are not in the 20th century. I think everybody understands now (including U.S.) that economic progress based on stability - and not military conflicts - is the way to go. The Balkans, on the other hand, is a totally different case. The amount of nationalism that exists in East Asia is nothing in comparison to the Balkans (especially during the '90s following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc).

tian4670 - interesting comment and totally agree with your good wishes for both parties, however, I do not agree with the statement that Japan alienated all neighbors. Viet Nam is on very good terms with Japan, and considers China is arch enemy for the last 1000 years including today, and the foreseeable future.

It is also odd to say Japan is alienated from most other Southeast Asian countries, as Japan enjoys fine relationships with Philippines, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and even Taiwan for the most part except for the Island dispute.

Of course there is disagreement with China and Korea over small islands, and strained relationships ensued; however your statement that "Japan has alienated all neighbors" is ridiculous.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

however your statement that "Japan has alienated all neighbors" is ridiculous.

I am talking about immediate neighbors. China have fine relationship with Cuba, Brazil,...., so what? Unless you redefine neighbors to be all countries on earth.

Wakarimasen : "Stupid statement. US has treaty obligations that force it to take sides if China starts acting up." ............................................................................................NO, not really 'stupid".. ................The Chinese are smarter than that. They have witnessed USA backing away from its avowed support of other friends and allies . . . .....................My question is : WHY does Japan allow USA presence on its sovereign soil . . .when there is no guarantee USA will defend Japan's right to sovereignty ?????????????????????????????????

China warns U.S. against taking sides in territorial disputes

Another example of China's courteous diplomacy. Taking sides would be tantamount to 'meddling in its internal affairs'? Or 'not be in the interest of mutual relations'? Or 'would be faced with serious consequences'?

What if the U.S. would side with China? No, the wording indicated that had already been ruled out. The Chinese were smart enough to see that and at the same time realized they were on slippery ice.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I draw the line when China tells me to stay out of the dispute. Japan and the USA have been staunch allies for decades now. If China wants to pick a fight with Japan then they're picking a fight with the USA too.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

China did tried to occupy japan twice and failed, South Korea being a vassal of Mongolia also tried to conquer Japan but failed. Then Japan fought China, China lost. Then Russia came marching at the door of Korea and the Koreans decided to be under Japanese rule rather than being scattered all over Europe as a practice of Stalin to disperse races to prevent uprising. But of course, Japan being racist as they were decided to make a 2nd class citizen out of them and treated them with disgrace. So who is right or wrong? It is a discussion in futility now.

I still remember my friend who was still mad at the Burmese (now Myanmar) because they invaded Thailand and defeated them with bamboo sticks 500 years ago. And yes, they are still fighting each other.

Politicians play politician games and people - like in these posts - react as they expect.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

China knows they can not fight a united front of free nations. Divide and conquer is their tactic and not ours.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The secretary will be welcome as a high official, she knows very well what she has achieving pretty successfully -- global 'warming' ( not climatic phenomenon ) -- divide & rule ! Turning SK against J by naming 'sex slavery' instead of 'comfort women' ; turning J against China : call 'Senkaku' instead of 'senkaku-Diaoyu'; turning the Philippines against China by naming 'West Philipine Sea' not 'South China Sea'. Skillfully, she avoided messing up Kuriles - northern Territories. Military exercises non-stop -- usually involving more marines than troops from the host countries that were supposed to send more troops themselves. In sum, people keep observing how she kept stirring up hatred & conflicts so that no one will voice out like 10 - 15 years ago demanding "YANKEES GO HOME !" selfish devil or global savior ? God bless America...

The problem with all of this is that it seems to be very much like the run-up to WWII with China substituted for Japan. I don't have a problem with China throwing off the disaster of communism but this thing about everybody else ganging up on them - hey guys, you remember Mao and the cultural revolution? You kept yourselves down for the last 50 years; not the USA, not anybody else. And, having now started to pull yourselves out of that toilet you now want to throw your weight around and claim the neighbor's territory? Based on what? That's not going to solve anything.

Hopefully the regional governments and the USA will let the Chinese know that naked agression isn't going to get them anywhere.

gelendestrasseSep. 05, 2012 - 01:46AM JST ... Hopefully the regional governments and the USA will let the Chinese know that naked agression isn't going to get them anywhere.

That is ... if they win. That is why it is important for Japan to befriend Korea and Russia. Unlike now...

You notice China's state control reverts back to 19th century mentality of how to deal in foreign relations? There is no diplomacy in Chinese politics. Up to now, the three foundations of U.S. and China relations are security, economy and ideology. Slowly but surely, ideological clashes are undermining the other two foundations. In terms of security, U.S. and China have already become competitors instead of allies, each viewing the other as a potential threat. The economic relationship between the two countries remains important, the political economies of a liberal democracy, which favors free competition and China's autocratic regime which favors state control, are fundamentally at clash point with each other. It won’t be long until this third pillar falls.

Some of the islands in this dispute are so far from mainland china.. i'd say the phillipines, vietnam, brunei, et all have a bigger claim.. or better yet, they could all pool their resources and develop the area jointly

0 ( +0 / -0 )

China needs to figure out that when push comes to shove how many allies are willing to rush to your side to help? I think the US has the advantage there and many of the surrounding asian nations would give China the cold shoulder except NK most likely. Russia on the other hand, I don't know who they'd be more willing to support though. They'd assist China if they felt that the US was gaining too much influence in the region, but if they also feel that China is trying to go the imperialistic colonialism route I'm pretty sure they'd stand by the US/EU perception of it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Dear China,

Get Bent! If you really think that the world is going to sit silently by while you bully Asia, you are wrong. If you think no one is clued into your expansionist policies you are also wrong. If you think that we in Japan and the rest of Asia will sit silent while you pressure us for your agenda, you are wrong again.

So once again. Get Bent!

Bottom line. Russia does not like or trust you. Your Asian neighbors do not like or trust you. The US does not entirely trust or favor you. So far the only country really in your corner is N.Korea and that does not help you at all, beside giving you an amusing and twisted side kick.

So China, sit down and shut you. Your agenda is not happening.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Correction. China, sit down and shut up. Your agenda is not happening.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@ smith, once again you got the wrong facts.

Japan invests SEVERAL times more in the USA than China does (if you can't understand this read: creates more jobs).

The amount of American debt Japan holds compared to China is essentially identical.

The overwhelming majority of chinese imports in the US are American companies that shipped their jobs to China. While the overwhelming majority of japanese imports are japanese products (not american products made in China). Everysingle study done in the US shows that trade in China has had a negative affect on employment and average wealth, while Japan actually invests more and creates more jobs in America than America does in Japan.

Logic breaks down when dealing with land dispute. One set of logic applies to Diaoyu, another to Dokto, another to Kuril, anymore? You can find anything in those so-called patriotic comments, except consistent logical thinking. Pour guys. Your arguments for Diaoyu severely damages your claims for Dokto and Kuril.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Sorry China--we're Americans, not Chinese citizens.

China needs to be quietly contained and closely and continuously monitored by all its neighbors and the major global powers - until its clear this currently rogue "narikin" nation intends to contribute to world peace and stability and relinquishes its policies of restructuring global hegemonies unilaterally.

mikihouseSep. 04, 2012 - 10:58PM JST China is cocky. However they never risked their economy for narrow interest group so far. Cliton can lecture to other nations. However her position for that dispute is very limited. It is very marginal for getting advanded from current situation.

I still remember my friend who was still mad at the Burmese (now Myanmar) because they invaded Thailand and defeated them with bamboo sticks 500 years ago.

I am definitely sure you have never learnt much about Thai and Burma history. How on earth you mentioned that Burmese used bamboo sticks for invading Thai. I was born in Burma and learnt about Ayodaya battle. It was back in 18th century. Burmese used many Canons, Elephants, swords, spears, Guns and explosive tools. There was thai musem in Northern Thailand about King Nauseam of Thai who defeated Burmese, Pls research the history before posting incorrect information. The war developed more combative form of Muay Thai and Burmese Let Wei.

And yes, they are still fighting each other.

I have just come back from Thai Myamar border town of Maesot. It is absoulutely wrong. They are making trade and investment instead of fighting each others. Your comment just like inflammable.

China is the biggest debt owner of US, the one to get bent is america! Their coming wars with Iran is just making her dependence severe!
