Don't know if this is jumping the gun or if the US is playing a bit of "bait and switch" to publicize its frustration with Japan, such being the machinations of diplomatic relations.

Perhaps it's time for Japan to switch its alliance with the U.S. to an alliance with China. But wait, many Chinese still hate the Japanese, so that alliance may be difficult...

With China and Singapore being the main stops for Obama. Japan should get in line or face being brushed aside very quickly. Sarge, the hatred comes mostly from the Japanese. I don't know one Japanese person who respects any other nation in Asia.

The Japanese have every right to change their minds. After all, thats the power of democracy. If they want to go down a cliff, as long as they voted for that, then that decision should be respected.

However, they need to back up all this talk and gamesmanship with some real policy making and initiative if they are to stand on their own two legs. Just giving the US the cold shoulder is very dangerous in this environment.

Unfriendly competitions between parties and governments get the most attention. The ones between parties, for example, the democrats of the US, often times do not get the focus they deserve. There's alot of living in the shadow of the Clintons going on. :)

The issue has already been decided by the two governments.

    Case closed.

Japan either obeys or faces annihilation.

If I may ask a question, please. What is this "Japan either obeys or faces annihilation"? I've seen this several times now. Has Pol Pot reincarnated?

  • memyselfI at 11:44 PM JST - 1st November

Hatoyama’s Democratic Party of Japan, which came to power in September after a sweeping election victory, has promoted the idea of moving the Futenma airfield out of Okinawa or even out of Japan.

    N. Korea would like it very much.

Japan, as a protectorate of the United States, is playing with fire. As things are going now, there's only 1 superpower (US), and 1 with superpower aspirations (China). If Japan pisses off one, it will have to cozy up with the other for survival.

And we all know that it would be a hard pill to swallow for the Japanese to bow to China.

Now the people of japan has seen the true 'face off' America! Mr Hatoyama's request for a new arragnement of US military based in Okinawa was the concern of local people and his intentions has nothing to offend america's interests in asia. But the snubbing from the Obama's administration was definately arrogances! America has never seen japan as a equal partner or an important ally. And that was ungratitutes to japan's eight years of contribution over supporting america's wars! I hope the people of Japan wake up and look at what is real look at the true face of america and the 'liars'foaming from uncle sam's mouth about those apprisals of japan. Once there was a difference or saying 'NO'to america's demands, their 'face off'was real nasty! Please drop the 'colonial mentality' and revoke all the benefits sacrificed by Koizumi to the Pentagon and abolishing the USJapan alliances, that was really an obstacle of peace and trust in asia! America never truly defending japan, they are just kicking around and Japanese paid their bills, you guys have to know this! Finally i want to tell the people of Japan, there was never 'a state of miserables'! There was only existing 'a mentality of miserables'! The LDP has gone, it's time to walk out of the miserables they created! The people of asia has never against Japan it was japanese people thought the entire asia against them, that was what LDP and US officals has 'scared' the people of Japan for 60 years!

Japan needs to have faith in itself to defend itself. Not allow itself to be used as a pawn in the conflict between American, China and Russia. North Korea is really just an oversize insane asylum and no threat except to South Korea. Japan needs to find its own path.

  • Sarge at 06:12 AM JST - 2nd November

"N. Korea would like it very much" ( moving Futenma out of Japan )

    No doubt.

YuriOtani - I think many of your fellow Japanese citizens would disagree with you that North Korea is no threat to Japan.

I think Secretary Clinton needs additional time to consult with President Obama about what America is going apologize to the Japanese for before meeting with Foreign Minister Okada. My guess is that she is negotiating with Obama as to whether of not to apologize for not surrending after Pearl Harbor or for winning the war by bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Once they complete their internal negotiations over what to apologize for, I suspect that the meeting will quickly be put back on Clinton's agenda.
