Well, Mr new Prime Minister, if you think you can reach some type of innovative, new comprehensive dialogue with your "friends" in Korea and China, better make sure none of your more "right" leaning DJP members, takes that little stroll down to Yasukuni to offer their prayers.....or Shimane-ken adopts any more "Takeshima" Days....or the Education Ministry approves any "new" textbooks.....

Forgive my ignorance in such matters, but why not exclude the US and all other non-East Asian countries?

Some americans have these strange idea that J can turn an military ally of C. Is just about trade for selling more cars and TVs, having less diplomatic friction with C and SK is only an excuse for negotiate lowering trade barriers.

Why should Japan, the nation that victimised East Asia for a good 100 years kneel to the same level as these victims?

Hatoyama said that what lies beyond it should be the idea of an ‘‘Asia-Pacific Community’’ and that he does not think everything can be achieved without involvement of the United States.

The spirit of fraternity is voluntary compliance by member states with respect to the treaties and regulations that forms the structure of such proposed supra-national community. Giving need to use the overwhelming might of US military force to enforce them would imply such fraternity doesn't exist!

It's about time Japan stops being subservient to the US. The war ended more than 60 years ago, and the geopolitical situation has shifted 180 degrees since - we are seeing the balance of power and wealth shifting from North America to Northeast Asia. This move by the PM is simply just accepting the reality of the 21st century.

"East Asia Community" is this like a Greater Asia Prosperity Sphere?

  • genkimark at 10:59 AM JST - 17th September

It makes sense, really. Good for Japan!

Geeeeeeeeee Whiz, sorta sounds similar to THE Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC). Well, I know something about that. It's big.

This will never work - they all loathe each other too much. War crimes, crappy little island disputes, trade issues, work visa issues etc will all make this more of a fighting shop than a talking shop.

Pan-Asianism should never happen, if that happens they should exclude the only country that makes it repulsive. Above all, should never happen.

  • rogerbentham at 04:54 AM JST - 21st September

of course, what would japan be without America? nothing.

  • Blue_Tiger at 12:09 AM JST - 23rd September

My question exactly, bwaudry: sounds too similar to its 1930s-40s predecessor....
