Why is it important for spouses to accompany political leaders to the summit? None of the spouses were elected to their position. None of them are (or should be) defined in terms of who they're married to. So Sarkosy's missis has her own career. Great. Let her get on with it.
After all the threads we've had recently about the status of women / women in the workplace / gender equality etc etc etc I'm surprised this even gets a mention. Shouldn't we be commenting instead on the wives who are accompanying their spouses on this high-level junket?
Cleo - excellent point. In addition, in NZ/Helen Clark's case, if her man didn't accompany her everywhere, would it draw the same comments? I suspect not.
It is probably important because she, the French President's wife, is a pin-up artist and appeared in various publications in the nude. What other head of state had a wife like that? It says much for the present head of France. Viva La France!

Glad to see she has her priorities right. The G8 summit is no where as important as an album release, is it?

@wilbur: Actually it's her husband who doesn't like Japan ... quite contrary to the former French president.

Yes, but 'Sarkosy the American' loves America.
I think we should arrange for him to win the next election, too.

Awesome... I'm looking forward to the next album.

Personally, I think this is a great idea and I'm not going to work either until the new Kumi Koda album is out.

Badsey - You're taking it too far; Bruni or Kumi can cancel some road trips ahead of their new album releases, but you still have to work ha ha ha

"i heard it was really because she doesn't like japan"
Impossible. All westerners love Japan except for the ones on the JT board.

We'll be seeing at least one less celebrity western woman trying to maneuver her way into a kimono. Phew!

Thank you for supporting my statement.
