Fukuda calls for major emitters to join climate change framework

TOKYO —

Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on Saturday urged all major greenhouse gas emitters to tackle climate change. Fukuda was speaking at an international forum on global warming which was attended by more than 100 lawmakers from G-8 countries, as well as Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa.

The forum was also attended by former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who both expressed hope for the G-8 leaders to agree on a proposal to halve global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Speaking at the opening session, Fukuda said, “The involvement of all countries is important for the global environment and I would like to deepen common understanding of the climate issue at the G-8 summit to deliver a powerful message that we will work together on global warming.”

Blair said he looked forward to Japan exercising its leadership at the summit in the area of climate change. ‘‘We’ve got to be realistic about this. It’s not 190 countries or however many sitting around the table that’s going to decide this. If you can’t get agreement among the major countries, you’re not going to get an agreement,’’ he said.

Blair added that global warming issues have to be resolved in a radical and politically realistic way, and that individual countries can enjoy economic growth and prosperity with new technology created for environmental protection.

At the end of the two-day forum on Sunday, a proposal for a post-Kyoto protocol framework will be adopted for discussion at the July 7-9 G-8 Summit in Hokkaido.

Sorry, not enough, ain't nearly enough. Beijing is running out of water at am alarming rate: "According to the report by Canada-based Probe, called "Beijing's Water Crisis: 1949-2008 Olympics," Beijing's 200 or so rivers and streams are drying up, and the city's reservoirs are almost empty.

More than two thirds of the city's water supply now comes from groundwater, and Beijing is extracting water originally intended for use in emergencies, such as war, from 1,000 meters or more underground.

At the same time, water demand is rising, and the Games - for which Beijing has developed man-made lakes, musical fountains and new parks - will consume around 200 million cubic meters of water, the report said."

GIven that many scientists are seriously talking about the 'end' of the North polar ice cap as early as next year, this is just a pathetic effort. Too damn little and too bloody late...

Even more annoying when one realizes there are alternative technologies that are ready now and would slash carbon emissions from cars at least, to zero. Nuthin' runs cleaner than air and air engines are cheap, reliable, powerful and casts about $2 to fill a tank. The next generation will have on board generators that recycle exhaust air back into the main air tank.

Beijing is running out of water at am alarming rate etc etc

So what's that got to do with carbon emissions? China's apparent water shortage could be caused through any one of a number of reasons.

Perhaps it has something to do with undersea volcanism? Perhaps you didn't know but the Antarctic ice sheet is actually increasing in size and depth. Naturally you would not hear about that in the corporate owned media.

...but I mostly agree with your second post about changing to cleaner and more efficient technologies. Nothing to do with CO2 (not a pollutant) but to cut down on pollution in general.

Great, another 'green queen.' So ridiculous, wish all this 'green' nonsense would stop.

wish all this 'green' nonsense would stop.

Not supporting the global warming crowd almost puts a person in the same camp as the holocaust deniers. The green movement has been hijacked and any worthwhile campaigning they do is now compromised by the gloom and doomers/profiteers.

It's funny that the global warming hype is being pushed by the likes of Al Bore and Tony BLiar. These two had no problems destroying the environment during their terms as VP/PM (think DU shells in Iraq/Yugoslavia or their support of laws in favour of heavily polluting corporations etc.) Few people seem to see the hypocrisy and even fewer question their real motives.
