Ha ha, I could almost see this coming - in today's Daily Yomiuri there's a graphic showing the resources that each country in Africa possesses.

If that's not 'in it for the resources' I'll eat my computer, ha ha

They'd better get some resources in exchange, or they're being played for fools.

isn't that the whole point... first come first serve, unless you take it by force like some countries I know...

Fukuda downplays suggestions that Japan is just out to secure Africa's resources

Of course this is part and parcel of Japan`s long-term strategy to secure more access to resources it does not have. So what? It is about time that Japan got on the ball.

And, as capone points out, Japan is playing a game of catch-up with China anyway.

Of course Japan is out to secure Africa's resources because China has already been doing so and Japan can't afford to rely on China to be gracious in sharing the wealth. This is how the world economy works, developed countries share technology with underdeveloped countries in exchange for raw materials. I'd say the new model is a lot more pleasant than the old colonial model.

My opinion is similar to usaexpat's on the trade aspects. I believe very strongly that Japan's relationships with African countries will also have far greater humanitarian aspects than China's current relationships on that continent. One reads reports from African countries on the resentment of many local people towards the Chinese, who come to their countries with Chinese laborers and have little or no interest in the lives of the local people.

Relatively speaking, Japan is much more international in its outlook and I suspect will enjoy much greater success in Africa.

It's silly to accuse Japan of being interested in "only" resources. All nation are intered in Africa for their resources. The question is whether a foreign country is simply taking, or giving back in terms of humanitarian aid, development assistance, building schools, wells, etc etc and if that country is seriously interested in the welfare of the people. Or....does it simply want the African resources and doesnt' give a ratys behind about providing arms to genocidal dictatorships?

Japan has no gun to export ,so it will only provide to Africa education, training ,technology, humanitarian aids..to make African lives more secure, richer, sufficient in food supply...all good stuffs. But be ware of the "other side"which will provide the"ass holes" of Africa with plenty of guns so they can rob the rich ,the highly educated ones and put themselves into the positions of power, like in Burma.

If world has to believe what Fukuda is saying...21st Century will name him "Saint Fukuda" or Japan will become 1st "Philanthropic Country" on earth. China outplayed India in Africa so now let's see how China will welcome Japan's presence in the region.
