So between now and September 2013 the Tokyo govt, AKA Shintaro Ishihara, will have carte blanche to waste our taxpayer's money on this bid? Moreover, I wonder if I am the only one who finds it ironic that they also wish to host the Paralympic Games in a city that is notoriously very user-unfriendly to anyone in a wheelchair or on crutches.
Guess the bright spot is to invest in a company that makes paper shredders - eventually those things will be going non-stop 24 hrs a day whether they win or lose the bid. ;-)

Utter BS. A Tokyo Olympics would be an expensive pork barrel project sold to the Japanese public as nationalistic self-congratulation.

I hope Ishihara dies before 2020 so that the wind will fall out of the sails on this one. A total waste of money.

Only a good idea if Japan can get it's financial house in order in the next few years. But what are the chances of that?

The beginning of the Greek crash was the wastful spending on their Olympics. Those who hate Japan and wish for its downfall will hope they get the Olympics. Let the arabs waste the oil dollars.

Imagine all the kickbacks, it's easy if you try.

I'm beginning to think they must be putting something in the water in the Diet. So much work to be done, so little money to do it with, and they're faffing about talking about games and savin' Capt'n Ahab on the high seas?
Obviously the politicians don't live in the same world as the rest of us, but please - Get . A . Grip.

How could they make this decision so quickly, but they cannot get anything else done properly?

Great, so in 9 years Tohoku could potentially host a few games in lieu of benefitting from the money that will be wasted NOW on the bid -- money which could easily go towards ACTUALLY helping the people of Tohoku. Government priorities with regards to how they spend money is simply baffling.
