Ohhh the double helix !!!!!! Yes, alot of people trying to get that citizenship here claiming to be half japanese. That's a no no !!!!! japanese men better be careful overseas relationships. Short time or long time it can cost their wallet. And that can be - priceless.

three letters and one word...DNA test. why does the father have to confirm anything when the test will clear it up?

It sounds like all the father has to do is say "nope, it ain't mine" and they'll slap the mom with a 1-yr jail sentence and 200,000 yen fine.

congratulations, japan. you have moved up a notch to...third world.

This is just going to encourage women to lie about the fathers of their children. Great for scammers I guess.

hey - japan - there is no test for japanese nationality but there IS a DNA test that will prove or disprove paternity. and (esp. if the father confirms) that kid DOES HAVE JAPANESE blood ergo nationality. QED

quato...You hit the nail on the head. The threat of jail time will scare many women from seeking citizenship for legitimate kids, if all it takes is the guy saying "nope, not mine". Typical of Japan -- the "law" appears to be fair, but in reality, it is far from it. Sorry, but that is hardly even third world, bobcatfish. The men here will still be able to run from their responsibilities.

Yeah, if they allow a paternity test to be the confirmation, I'd say fine. If all the father has to do is say, nope, not mine, then I'd say this is crap.

should I be investing in the D.I.Y. D.N.A. K.I.T. or should I start up a company that can do that.

A simple DNA test on the child will suffice - the unique Japanese DNA will be present, clearly distinguishable from say, Korean.

I doubt it would go to court just because the father said no. J-Prosecutor would want a confession or DNA test before risking shame of having a not guilty verdict. I'd be more worried about them sweating a false confession out of the mother.

this made me laugh. but you have a point, what if the mother can't point who exactly is the father (ya'll know what I'm talking about)? I'm not sure if japan has national DNA data base.
