OssanAmerica- Stumpped you there didn't i? Tee Hee!
Obama, tell the cheeky bleeders to bugger off and teach their kids the truth about the war and why Nuclear bombs have saved Japan from becoming a commie state.

Just by remembering what nukes did to the people of Hiroshima. Killing thousands of people in just a few seconds should be reason good enough for why nukes should never ever be used again and why we should work towards a nuke free world. Good luck to the people of Hiroshima. You have my support.

200,000 people were incinerated at Hiroshima and Nagasaki...
more pandering to the master, as usual.

Kenjinakasone, more people died during the 'fire bombing' of Germany by the British. -And in more horrific ways.

Well, I don't fault students for bein' young, idealistic and naieve.
Folks, the world ain't gonna be "nuke-free". The genie's out of the bottle. For an adult to even suggest it displays a gross amount of stupidity - not naievete. For you: Visualize world peas.

Obama said a lot of stuff during the campaign knowing full well he would not be able to fulfill once he assumed the office of the presidency. A nuclear weapon free world is a lofty ideal all could agree on but completely unrealistic until some other weapon renders them useless.
I hope he does visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki and speak about the world becoming a more peaceful place and maybe mention that the last 60 years of relative peace in the region is not a result of wishful thinking.

Here's the nature of war folks: Whoever makes the other side give up by killing the most people, wins. Japan lost, but kids, guess what, they really wanted to win. that is kids, your peaceful nation didn't kill nearly as many people as they'd hoped.

bamboohat - Daaaaayum! But you know what? Things have changed since WW2. We've got smart bombs now that we can deliver into certain windows into certain buildings or certain caves. Not necessary to use nukes or even carpet bomb.
Happy New Year!

Bringing this back onto the subject of the piece - it's not the nukes that are bad, after all - they're just inanimate things. If you can tackle the urges to kill and destroy it'd be a better thing - and that's what Hiroshima should push for - international understanding.

So, what is the most realistic lesson Japanese can learn from Hiroshima? is it:
In the case a foreign power threatens Japan with nuclear weapons: capitulate.
The quantity of total nuclear weapons yield available should be limited under non-proliferation accords, that is..the possession of such nuclear weapons should be limited to the 5 permament UNSC members (which Japan is not), if one of these states threatens Japan with nuclear weapons, see 1.

Nukes aren't much of a deterrent to terrorists, religious nuts and totalitarian leaders. While Nukes will devastate towns and cities of the average citizen, the ones who start the wars will be 100's of miles aways in some secret bunker if not hiding in enemy territory.
The assumption is that the killer or person who starts a Nuke war is afraid of getting Nuked themselves, but we all well know that their are plenty of suicidal people out there both military, religious and common.
How about 5 Nukes allowed per country or 1 Nuke per 10million citizens or should we distribute per land mass.

Hiroshima hopes to invite Obama as advocate of nuke-free world. Hope is a wonderful thing!
USARonin at 03:28 AM JST - 3rd January
Libertas, you don't seriously believe Obama's seriously gonna push for a new-free US, do ya?
He's already spoken his intentions to be more hawk-like than John McCain ever would've been.
Seriously.

"nuke-free"

Japan is under the protective umbrella (oh so moe!) of the USA.
A nuclear threat to Japan is a threat to the US, also it's fairly close to China's backyard, so they wouldn't like that either.
Also while I like your idea, it needs teeth against those countries who would develope nukes outside the Five, ie Rogue States like N. Korea.
However I don't know what you'd do with countries like India and Pakistan who already have nukes. You'd have to give them HUGE concessions to take away their nukes and no one wants to pay that much.
