Is the irony not apparent?
John Galt
Might as well call themselves "The Walking Dead" party.
Graham DeShazo
I about laughed myself into a toilet accident with this one. A bunch of metabolic syndrome comb-overs with bad dye jobs calling themselves the next generation. Seriously, Monty Python couldn't have come up with this.
commanteer
You really have to laugh at their complete lack of self-reflection.
Pukey2
81, 74, 72, 71, 71! What irony are you talking about?!
Yes, and caused by YOU and your generation! If this were my country, I'd be appalled and frustrated that this is all politicians can offer. But it's not and so I don't care.
shanabelle
They will run out of party names soon.
Serrano
"Ishihara was previously a four-term governor of Tokyo...."
Incredible.
"...It was his plan to buy the Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands that sparked the present row over their ownership with China, which claims them under the name Diaoyus."
All the Japanese car makers that took a major sales plunge in China are thankful.
"A bunch of metabolic syndrome comb-overs with bad dye jobs"
Hey, Inoki is still in good shape, and his dye job is not bad!
EthanWilber
Yeah right, are these delusional geezers kidding themselves or they are living in a parallel universe?
Forget about the lofty goal to lead the next generation, if they don’t destroy current generation, that would be a plus.
But, I am still appreciate that Ishihara and the rest of his ultra-nationalistic gang are, in fact, reminding us of potential danger and destruction pushed by right-wingers in Japan.
toshiko
Next Generation Party , but reality is Past Generation Party Past generation people should let younger generation decide on their own, After all, old people doe out before youngsters.
Knox Harrington
Incorrect. It is the "people of the next generation" that will lead themselves.
Michael Craig
It should be the "Elderly Generation Party"!
sangetsu03
At your age you have to be led to the toilet, or get your diapers changed if you can't make it that far. Your group of absent-minded geriatric old farts who's mindset is stuck in the middle of the last century is one of the main reasons why Japan is struggling as badly as it is now. You and your ancient friends need to be put out to pasture, or into a retirement home, and let the next generation lead itself. Us younger folk are actually quite capable of getting things done without your help, thank you very much.
CrazyJoe
They should call it the Gerontocracy Party.
Knox Harrington
I love that AFP can't really hide the contempt for this geriatric clown and his pals.
borax
It is your responsibility to get the heck out of the way and let the next generation (or maybe just skip the next generation and go to the one after that) try to lead themselves, and try to dig everyone out of the mess that you created.
jerseyboy
Haven't you done enough of that already?
nath
Saw the party group press conference and it's nice to see that it includes two female lawmakers. Just think what these 'good ol' boys' will have in store for them! What those two will endure will pale in comparison to what Ayaka Shiomura went through. Maybe they will be tasked on ways to lure the female voters to the party with slogans like,
Andreas Zachcial
Polit Satire at its best!! Does anyone take japanese politicians serious?
ratpack
Oh for crying out loud....will you just retire and quickly buzz off please.
Eve Aphayboun
NEXT GENERATION... Meet the OLD GENERATION.
Unfortunately, the only thing they are capable of "leading" is each other-- to the rest room!
taj
Well, after The Next Generation, they have Deep Six Nine,.... (or is it Six Feet Deep)
Disillusioned
It should have been, the fallen generation.
MASSWIPE
Hiranuma Takeo--let's see, the old guy who a few years back scuttled any thoughts of allowing a female emperor in Japan on the grounds that Princess Aiko might marry a blue-eyed foreigner and have a haafu child who could then ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne (the horror). Hiranuma also questioned the national loyalty of politician Renho on the grounds that she was a naturalized Japanese citizen. And to top it all off, Hiranuma is the adopted son of Hiranuma Kiichiro, prime minister of Japan in 1939 and a convicted Class A war criminal.
This is one of the founders of the Next Generation Party?
Spanki
Who keeps giving these idiots the money to carry on? Just give up now please!
maplegend
How about 'That 70's Show!"
nath
前世代の党 would have been more appropriate.
HaraldBloodaxe
I'm really quite amazed that Ishihara has the brass neck to show his face anywhere after he dared to describe the 3/11 tragedies as "Punishment from Heaven" because "Japanese have become greedy".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-sGVXHbWvE
That’s the kind of leadership this country can well do without, and why the younger generation need to develop an interest in voting.
FightingViking
@Disillusioned
You just reminded me of an old film called the "Fallen idol" - which would also be quite an appropriate name for these old geezers...
Vincehwr
They should name their party, 'Old men yell at clouds'.
Elizabeth Heath
The Next Generation Party? Perhaps they are all Star Trek fans. The Same Old Reactionary Bollocks Party would be a more apposite name. But really, this is hilarious and if I didn't know better I would believe this was satire at it's best.
gogogo
I think you mean mindless yes men.
Disillusioned
It reminded me of the transformers movie, Revenge of the Fallen. It's quite clear that Ishihara has spent all his life in politics and there is nothing else he can do. Most 80 year olds are playing golf or climbing mountains. This guy is dreaming if a hole-in-one and making mountains out of mole hills.
nath
these old farts sure has raised hell in their lifetime...I hope they are ready for the lake of fire they will encounter on the other side...
Scrote
Geriatric generation party.
Simon Foston
This would be funny if it wasn't our taxes paying their Diet member salaries. I wouldn't mind if they were strictly and properly performance-related, though.
Cricky
70/80 year olds? New generation? Why why why we're they not Kamakazi pilots, probably because their fathers were in charge.
nath
next generation at 81 years old, hahaha
isoducky
New generation is the same as the old generation, just with less people. This is not a really good message to send people.
shanabelle
Next Reincarnation Party....
Baibaikin
Echoing @Graham de Shazo's comment, I assume they will be under the umbrella of the Ministry of Silly Walks.
Bad2Dbone
I can imagine their major supporters and contributors "Pfizer , Cialis , Polygrip , Attends and Metamucil"
sf2k
...further into the ground, if possible"
zico11
71 is not old in Japan! :)
sighclops
The irony is priceless
afanofjapan
Ishihara instigated the crackdown on dancing in clubs. He obviously knows what the next generation needs,.
Unfortunately it will be the oldies who end up voting this party in, because the actual next generation are to apathetic to bother voting.
Michael Grant
Another campaign, another "new" party.
Meet the new party, same as the old party.
Geez I wish these guys would just do their jobs for once, instead of this disingenuous grand-standing all the time!
shanabelle
Another party name, great news for the sign-writing and printing industry.
TokyoGas
Next Generation Party? Comedy, thy name is Japanese politics.
Jimizo
Next Generation Party? They'd better start employing necromancers to keep the next generation informed of policy updates.
wtfjapan
should be call " Geriatric Recalcitrant Xenophobia Party of Japan"
AustPaul
The Geriatric Jijis! Gentlemen, time to step down and enjoy the golden years... Young people of Japan, time to step up.
Dennis Bauer
Shouldn't it be the Last generation party?
ANewAsia
For all the flak that they draw actually, and despite the hilarity of this article, the old farts aren't that bad.
Ishihara has been named as a hardcore nationalist. Surprisingly, in reality he is relatively sympathetic to immigrants. His political stance has also been teeter-tattering between far right and centre right, making him an extremely unreliable political ally. And, that, is why he has never been PM.
Conversely, I absolutely resent the illiterate Net Right and some of the pretentious Neocons in Abe's group more.
PeterNinnes
Talkin' 'bout de-generation. Why don't they all f-f-f-f-fade away?
kharashima
Why are all of you except for one individual very critical of their ages?
I believe that they have brilliant minds and they can ignore your short- mindedness. Those of you who are very critical of them will also become old. How would you feel if all of your grandchildren feel the way you do about their ages although you may be keen and active individuals.
I hope that you wold stop and think what you said about them.
DP812
If I act as racist and xenophobic as these bastards, I would hope my grandchildren would knock some sense into me.
alotofthings
Old men blasting in microphones party.
You call this next generation?
flowers
Old but not out. They really like politics let them play. J politics are like child’s play anyway as long as they have money and influence they can be part of it. But, they’ve got to be able to make loud noises or infamous remarks, or be part of any controversial issues. Sticking the head out is the basic requirement. And, don’t forget brain is not needed. So, respect your elders, let them play.
boweevil
How would they know what problems young people face today? The biggest problem young people face today is living under a politcal system that is dominated by octogenarians who think they are somehow in a postion to speak authoritatively about the problems young people face today.
