Kim's death came as Pyongyang proposed the resumption of six-party denuclearization talks.

So he died at a very convenient time for certain groups within the government, perhaps? Now the talks won't be resumed and they can continue with their nuclear ambitions.

I'd say it was the major-general, on the train, with a poisoned martini.

I wonder if he was a happy man. I think it would suck to be stuck in that country with all those expectations.

I fear his severely brainwashed successor will be much worse. Good luck NK.

Impressive. They were able to get an emergency cabinet meeting together much faster than they did when the melt-thoughs were in full melt.

"Emergency Security Meeting" - So we can expect a decision in about 6~12 months time.

What is this? this is a joke ? Noda has proven that it is really a mediocre man, he is shaking with fear by something as insignificant. I say it's much ado about nothing !

I think to go in and attack now with the Americans and CHinese and Russians together would be a good option and fix that place.

    Question for all of you:

How come so called communist leaders always live as kings, but the people are dirt poor?

I would like to see Kim's closet just as they showed us Imelda's and her high heels.

The Japanese government hopes that this unexpected development would not bring any adverse impact on the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula,

Also, this from Yonhap news agency

All along its east coast... North Korea is building underground missile bases and silos. As the geography suggests, the main target is Japan, including American military bases there. Mr. Yun claimed that some 200 Rodong missiles (with a range of up to 1,300 miles, enough to reach anywhere in Japan) and 50 SSN-6 missiles (range of up to 2,500 miles) are already in place. Two new bases under construction in the northeastern part of the country are thought to be for the Taepodong-2, a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile, which in theory could reach Alaska ... The report indicated that about 600 short-range Scud missiles are based just 30 miles north of the paradoxically named demilitarized zone and aimed at all of South Korea's strategic targets and industrial complexes. That's on top of 11,200 artillery pieces, some apparently outfitted with chemical shells, ever ready to pulverize greater Seoul and its 20 million inhabitants.

The Japanese government and of course South Korea have a situation. No one's sleeping tonight.

I guess this is the time that all those American military bases don't look so bad. Neh?

We do not need fear these toy missiles and this third-rate dictator was a good blackmailer and nothing else

The reports of his declining Health have been well reported over the past 3 years, I would hope that a strategy had been worked out in advance and this rush to meet is a show...of bussyness rather than a panic.

Could anyone see the "real" reason why it was necessary to have an "emergency SECURITY meeting" and not just an emergency meeting?

Who or what is at "Risk" that requires military readiness? Who or what is "Threatened" that require military readiness?

Who or what others are involved or could be involved?

    What can be expected?
    What is desirable?

  • 0

    kazetsukai

Is this "related" to the S.Korea sudden statement regarding the "comfort women" to keep N. Korea at least on their side for now?

It seems to appeal to the "same" nation "united" or at least with the same history emotion, does it not?

It appears to have been a "planned" controversy topic does it not? That is if they were aware of the situation.

    Question for all of you:

How come so called communist leaders always live as kings, but the people are dirt poor?

I would like to see Kim's closet just as they showed us Imelda's and her high heels.

Because ideologies are fraudulent. They are invented and used by politicians to pander to public inclination only to serve some other agenda. In most cases a self-serving power structure. For example Hitler used the National Socialist German Worker's Party to accumulate power within a desperate country. Now look at this; we have "National" which panders to the Right-wing, we have "Socialist" which panders to the Left-wing and we have the "Worker's Party" which panders to the Moderates. It has something for everyone! How great! Wrong! It was simply a vehicle for which Hitler used to take control the state. In North Korea's case, it's a Democratic People's Republic right? No way! Not a chance! What a fraud! The closest thing you can relate North Korea to is Poland during the Nazi occupation. The country is essentially one giant concentration camp ran by the Oligarchy, these "Kings" as it were.

  • 1

    Foxie

I am sure that North Korea would put stability first at a time of crisis amid state mourning over the death of its “Dear Leader.” They would know that they have nothing to win by risking such an attack because of the South Korea-U.S. security alliance. There is the China factor, too. Therefore waging a war appears not to be an option at the moment.

"Japan is home to a sizeable North Korean community"

I have never understood this. Do these people not have access to information in Japan?
Do they not understand what kind of screwed-up leadership they have?

    Elbuda Mexicano

Serrano, very good questions, but from the North Koreans here in Japan I have met, they all seemed BRAINWASHED, they only believe what they want to believe, that Japan is EVIL, that the Koreans are only VICTIMS, that their only real FRIEND is CHINA?? etc..Very sad indeed, and they can not even go back with out fear of never coming back to JAPAN, which is so EVIL?? WTF!!

    smithinjapan

Tokyokawasaki: ""Emergency Security Meeting" - So we can expect a decision in about 6~12 months time."

No... that's when they'll bring in the panel of experts, who will take a few months to declare that, "North Korea has some problems". Then they'll form a committee to look into the validity of making a decision.

Serrano: "I have never understood this. Do these people not have access to information in Japan? Do they not understand what kind of screwed-up leadership they have?"

Your inability to understand it shows! Their 'leadership' is PM Noda.

as the government offered rare “condolences” on the passing of a much-reviled man.

rare? condolences? whatever. the government offered nothing more than a self-serving effort to appear polite to the passing of a fake communist sh!thead

  • 1

    madmel

I don't feel paranoia is unreasonable as the successor is but a young man in charge of a military and nation. I can just imagine the kind of brainwashed angst that dwells in a 20 something year old person in his shoes. A four star "general" in his early 20's....come on that is not an earned position at all. Any nation with a proper military would never see a person in such a position without at least 25 years experience....

  • 3

    zichi

Some say he has been dead for a long time and the rare public appearances were done by a double. I would hope this will lead to an improvement rather than more of the same. N. Korea is the last real communist country if it ever was and badly needs to come into the 21st century. The N. Korean people badly need a very different kind of life.

Oh you weren't here in Japan in 1998 and 2009 when North Korea shot missiles over Japan. I was here. Everyone freaked out. Afterwards, Japan has bought destroyers from America and Japan has a missle defense shield in place throughout the country. Japan has at least two new satellites spying on North Korea.

Personally, this is a big game of chicken between the governments of Japan and South Korea with North Korea.

I fear because these are toy missiles. Even if they were aiming Alaska, they would end up shooting Kashiwazaki nuke plants in Niigata, and they would say, "oops, sorry..."

Ugh, bad move Japan. I know you guys like your politeness and everything, but that was a no-no. Dicators don't deserve condolences. God, I wonder why Kim Jong Il never got the same kind of vitriol thrown at him that Gadaffi did? North Korea was always a far worse place to live in then Libya and with even worse human right abuses.

Bad move there. The government shouldn't give their condolences to this man. I'm sure theres not a single Japanese national who is sad at his passing. Now lets just wait and see how much of a nutjob his son will be..

    ReformedBasher

No harm in extending an olive branch. Japan and other countries (South Korea, America, China) have been trying to improve relations with North Korea for years.

Let's hope a change in management leads to North Korea losing it's hardcore stance. It would be a win-win situation for everyone.
