Japan denies report it asked S Korea to mediate abductee kin meeting

TOKYO —

Japanese government officials on Friday denied a media report that Japan had asked South Korea to mediate the arrangement of a meeting between the parents of a Japanese victim of abduction by North Korea and their granddaughter who lives in the reclusive state.

“The media report is not based on facts,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura told a press conference. “It is a very regrettable article when considering the feelings of the Yokota couple,” he said referring to the parents of abductee Megumi Yokota.

What's the big deal if it's true? They're asking for mediation when it can not only help, but is necessary; are they afraid it makes the extremely poor and limited stance of the J-government look even weaker? I mean, they certainly look stupider trying to deny it.
