    Japan's nightmare has come true.

It appears that Japan's breathing space is quite a bit smaller these days, with South Korea controlling the Tokdo Islands, Russia controlling the South Kuriles, and China controlling these oilfields so close to the Japanese home islands.

OssanAmerica: there is supposedly gaz around and a lot of fish.

Who owns the islands can increase the territory in his control.

‘‘Gas fields such as ‘Tianwaitian’ are located in waters controlled by China that are not under dispute,’’

Sounds like typical twisted PRC logic, along the lines of Taiwan being an "internal issue".

Probably part of the PRC's moves to play the nationalist card in order to distract the populace from the economic nosedive and other crises plaguing China.

Japan has had nightmare for a long time. Japan does not feel it any more and rather get used to. Who has real problems in Japan about islands issues. Fishermen only have problems as there are good fishing area there, but I think Government doesn't pay much attention everyday. China is drilling there for gas because China really needs a lot of energy today. Japan never tries to drill around there. Japan actually could not and can not becuse gas fields are very (too) far away from Japan and can not make too long pipe lines there in ocean. I think Japan would not drill there in future.

Gas fields are just as (too) far away from China and can not make too long pipe lines there in ocean, or so I hear...

They don't need pipelines. That's what FPSOs (Floating Production,Storage and Offloading vessels) are for.

Yes that is often repeated as a "possibility". It is in sharp contrast to the South China Sea or the Kuriles where energy and fishery resources are well recognized by everyone.

Unagidon - Is China using FPSOs for gas carrying I'm not sure? I heard China is using piplines under the water.

The Japanese have no respect for Australia's EEZ so why should the Chinese respect Japan's EEZ? What goes around comes around!

  • kwatt at 06:46 PM JST - 5th January

China really needs more energy for development of the country. China is working in gas field in China's territory. It seems to bo no problem. I think China would be strongest country economically in near future.

Japan really needs to stop using the word "regrettable", business is business and "regrettable" actions don't mean anything. Japan needs to get tough and stop trying to "shame" foreign companies and people with "regrettable actions" because it doesn't work outside of Japan.

  • yosun at 10:54 PM JST - 5th January

The way Japan treats Taiwan the way China treats Japan, nothing new at all!

  • Thenewfront at 05:33 AM JST - 6th January

How come everything is always the vague "regretable".

Japan may blast China verbally, but try with your weapons and find your country decimated instantly. Tee! Hee!

  • Scrote at 08:52 AM JST - 6th January

Japan should stop whining and start drilling. If they don't want to drill for the gas then what are they moaning about?

  • Molenir at 09:03 AM JST - 6th January

I agree, they should sponsor some exploration of their own in the same area. Then hear back from the Chinese about how doing so is 'regretable' as well.
