It's clear now to other politicians now as well as the public that the Restoration Party just can't be trusted to keep its word or have the appropriate gravitas expected of a major political party.

Worked for Detroit! I'm wondering just what it is they want to restore.

Why would foreigner visitors want to come to Japan to gamble? Casinos might as well be confined to Ainu reservations in remote areas of Hokkaido.

I don't know whether marketing will be aimed at Japanese or foreigners, but if it passes, you can be sure that JTB, etc. will get on board with tour packages.

why is that the back of my mind automatically makes the equation casino=yakuza...? maybe I read too much manga. [or maybe not? XD]

Hokkaido is too cold comparing Macao, Hong Kong, Singapore, Phillipine, Vietnam for Chinese billionaires and multi millionaires. No snow hot area? Maybe Okinawa if US military move out from Okinawa?

A model case for the legalization of casinos is Singapore. Lee Kwan Yu was severely against casino legalization until the end of the last century yet even he realized that it would be a turbo charger to the Singapore economy in the 21st Century and gave his approval for the two large casino resorts Marina Bay Sands and Sentosa. It has increased tourism significantly, created jobs and has boosted the growth of the country, exactly what Japan needs.

So obviously the "Japan Restoration Party" is actually interested in 'restoring' the health and well-being of Japan, and not interested in ruining lives through gambling (sarcasm, in case it's not clear).

Sands is owned by Sheldon Adelson of Las Vegas Sands top share holder. He has eyes for investing in Japan for a quite while., Multi-multi billion dollars investment, MGM entertainment, too.

They have many casino-hotels in Las Vegas and S. East Asia.

Nevada residents do not pay State Income Tax. State Budgets? Casino-hotel tax take care of Education, etc. There are schools to train casino employees.

During recession time, many college degreed people moved to Las Vegas and became table game dealers.

Jobs? requirement differ to be interviewed. One large casino-hotel ad was that applicants had to get interview wearing a swimming suit. Job was many pool attendants. There is no sales tax in Nevada, either.

I wouldn't bet (pun intended) that foreigners won't come to Japan to gamble. I think they would.

Not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing. Will it be good for the local government and service sector? Yes. But last night I was at an entertainment complex to catch a movie...most of the complex was empty (including the theater), but the Pachi-slot parking structure was packed as I drove by. This kind of gambling addiction is NOT likely to be helped with a combination of a crap economy and even more ways to lose even more money -- in the hope of winning their way out of the financial trap many households face.

Casinos only mean more dead kids in cars and more kids left at home unsupervised. It's also quite odd the the so-called 'restoration party' is plugging casinos. I don't recall Japan ever having casinos in the past.

I bet you $10 that this legislation doesn't go...wait a minute..

The Japanese Restoration Party belongs in a museum. With all the other restorations.

Why is the so-called 'restoration party' introducing something that has never been a part of Japanese culture? Seems like a major contradiction to me.

Introducing casinos in Japan would be a terrible thing! It would not be regulated. There would be no compulsive gambling legislation, counseling or training of staff to recognize compulsive gamblers and I have my doubts as to whether the government would control payout rates as is done in other countries. I could also go on to include increased deaths of children left in cars and at home without supervision while mama and papa gamble away their food money. Sorry, but I don't think Japanese culture has the maturity or mental health and welfare programs to responsibly manage casinos in this country.

Will Hashimoto discourage locals from blowing their salaries in casinos as Singapore does? I don't think so.

"(In Singapore), to discourage locals from gambling, the government collects casino entrance fees — $70 for a 24-hour period or $1,400 for a year — from all Singaporeans and permanent residents. Almost 30,000 people, mostly recipients of public assistance or those who have filed for bankruptcy, are automatically barred from entering."

Guess the casino licenses and the construction money will mysteriously fall into the laps of the yaks and the brothers-in-laws and uncles of the politicians.

Casino-hotels have parking places for employees and guests beside handicap specified areas. You can not leave anyone in the car as lenses everywhere catch you and parking area security guards check everywhere. That is why no death in the car at any casinos.

Stephen Vowels: You sounds you have imagination on yakuza people. Casino license is given once when it is opened. Not even Kyokutokai or Yamaguchigumi has anything to do with Mega billion dollar investment by Sands, MGM, or Wynn, Construction will be done with reputable established organization with construction artists.

Gambling is already in Japan, the pachinko parlors are raking in the cash. Now they just need casinos so the upperclass gambling addicts don't get dirty going to pachinko parlors. This will also help widen the gap between the rich and the poor. Great idea, worked for the USA. Ask the Native Americans about all the money they see from casinos on their land.

I believe Japanese Govt want to shift Chinese Billionaires and multi millionaires who spend money in Macao, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malayasia casinos to Japan, but not Japanese people. But Tokyo and Osaka are too cold in winter, Southern Japan Kyushu and Okinawa are warm enough, Don't know how new Casino bills will pass in Japan.

Pro-casino Japanese lawmakers have been struggling to pass legislation for more than a decade, watching with envy as Singapore and other Asian countries made plans for multi-billion-dollar resorts to attract tourists and investment.

I am totally against this bill. Are you willing to invite someone like Sheldon Adelson and Donald Trump to Japan to suck your blood? You've got to be kidding. Read what and how they have tried to destroy US politics. Be careful. I am warning you will regret. Please do not pass this bill..
