Cricky - totally agree. Why won't the US be part of the Kyoto protocol? Are they special or something?

Come on people Head out of sand please
Global warming is just a tax scheme.
CO2 is what plants thrive on and only accounts for 1/2000 of the total factors that affect the Earth's ambient temperature.
You really need to start studying the news and current events and not just drink from the media hose.
Email leaks? Top US climate specialist silenced? wakey-wakey

tokyokawasaki: Yes the US is special, but that is not the issue. If the huge polluting economies of China, India, and upcoming Brazil do not sign then why should the US?
Japan cannot afford to sign now anyway. The place needs quite a number of years to get back on its feet, and then they can look at it. One thing they can do with all the new construction that must go on is to go green when doing it.

ihavegreatlegs: Great nations and leaders lead by example. Not playing 'copycat' or 'lets wait and see'.
If the US is special, it should be leading the race to cut CO2 and then pressuring other nations to join... I see nothing special about the US given their current stance. What China and India does is not an excuse for the US to do nothing.

So Japan wont spend many billions on sketchy and unproven science models.

I remember when Hatoyama made this pledge at the U.N. What does he have to say about this?

The only realistic way to cut large amounts of CO2 would be to promote nuclear power. Since that is out right now. something has to give. Political fiction can only go so far before it collides with reality.

The U.S. (under Bush Jr.) never signed the Kyoto agreement because the world's largest CO2 polluter (China) had already indicated that they weren't going to sign.
As Japan is going to have to resort to more oil and coal power production now that they've put nuclear production on the back-burner, there's no way they can meet their planned CO2 reduction goals under the Kyoto agreement. So I'm not surprised they aren't going to extend the pledge. Why promise to do something you already know will be impossible given your current situation?

Seems like just yesterday that Kyoto Protocol was the most urgent issue on the planet.

I just hope that this means the end of "Cool" Biz! The productivity increase once this pledge expires and the current power shortage ends and we get our livable indoor temperatures back should be inspiring.
