Ships from the US were suddenly not delivered since Duerte called Obama a "son of a...."

Headline: "China, Japan seek to improve ties as Xi, Abe meet"

I don't disagree with this decision, but how is this going to improve ties with China?

10 small patrol ships, 2 large patrol ships, and 5 used surveillance aircraft.

Why should China care? It'd be a pimple on the butt of the invasion force China currently has stationed in the Philippines.

What you say is not true. I know JapanToday will delete comments for any number of reasons, but apparently that they do not contain a kernel of truth is not one of them.

If Duarte continues to side with China and insult leaders of the free world let the Chinese have the Philippines. He wants to be a commie let him and the people bow to their new leaders of China

Turbotsat: Haven't you noticed that China take's offense at any perceived "meddling" in their affairs? And meddling by Japan or the USA infuriates them even more.

A real masterstroke from Abe, a genius indeed, his proxy Duterte will keep the Chinese busy and make them divert more resources to keeping the phillipines at bay, this will be like a jab to the body that will wear china down and lead to the collapse of the communist china just like the Soviet union.

Japan's moral compass on display as usual. Forget that Duterte is the head of a death squad and condemns the UN, the US, and probably even Japan, as well as anyone else that questions it's war on drugs and the innocents dying; giving him these things will help Japan, and that's all that matters. Like sanctioning Russia because "it's right", then asking Russia not to hold it against them and offering to work with them all the same. Like agreeing with UN and US sanctions on Iran, but still asking the US not to freeze Japanese assets if it uses Iranian oil. Like suddenly thinking Israel is the tops and has a great human rights record (they do not) now that oil is less of a dependency and they won't depend on Iran/ME as much. Doesn't matter what it is -- if it furthers Abe's agenda he will do it and then pretend to take the high road later.

Seriously? What could possibly go wrong...

@DocCarlos, Yes, absolutely! The Philippine leader is cozying up to China in the hopes of tapping into China's venture capital.

Duterte cannot have his cake and eat it too.

An arbitration court in The Hague in July invalidated China’s claims to the waterway after a case was brought by the Philippines, a ruling that Beijing refuses to recognise.

The judgement is already there. Whether the convicted party recognizes it or not does not matter. The international community should not yield to Chinese logic. After the ruling, every nation in the world that respects and upholds the international laws is an interested party to the dispute.

TOO funny, like China will collapse in and on itself just because of a few "Filipino" boats nearby their "island"! Meanwhile Duterte is trying to cozy up to China like Trump is with Russia.......because dictators just "like" each other. My wife, a Filipina, calls Duterte, a "nazi" and it is funny how all of her "Christian" friends support him, even with him wishing he had first go on a rape of Christian missionary.
