The rest of the G8 leaders will roll their eyes and pledge their moral support.
Another example of why the Japanese are never taken too seriously on the world stage.
I actually don't see the problem with doing that. Japan letting that go with out even saying a thing would degrade even more any possible influence they have in international affairs
G-8 summit is about general worldwide topics (environment, macroeconomic policies, global security, international organizations, military cooperation, etc...), not about specific local issues. So it is highly doubtful this issue will bring any result for Japan. G-8 summit is the wrong place to talk about this. Six-party talks with North Korea is the perfect place to raise the issue.
piglet...even 6-party talks are not the place, for the same reasons...the other 4 countries don't want to hear it...the perfect place would be 2-party, face-to-face talks with NK.
‘‘We expect that the Korean Peninsula issue, the hottest topic,
I can think of other hot spots around the world that pose more imminent threats to regional and/or global security, and I can also think of other problems that are literally making the world a hotter place, but Japan has long taken the all-the-eggs-in-one-basket approach to dealing with North Korea.
Japan has every right and should bring up the abduction matter, regardless
of whether any constructive progress is made or not by doing so. Bringing it up goes on record. It's a good valid reason/excuse to keep a governer on any aid, assistance or lifting of sanctions bilaterally.
Furthermore, considering that South Korea considers that there are some 400 abductees from their country, it's hardly a matter that "only concerns Japan".
Japan has every right and should bring up the abduction matter,
Of course they do. But remember, other countries have to right to put this on the bottom of the list and get on with the more important things on the agenda, especially, as piglet says, this is a G8 summit.
i think japan does have a right to bring it up. maybe it isn't the hottest topic, but if more countries are aware of the situation, then maybe something can be done about it. plus, north korea might get squeamish if more people know about it. thats just my opinion.

good idea...stall the important talks about economics and the environment and replace them with a topic thats of interest to only one country
