Japan won't reopen talks with S Korea on sex slave issue

The Japanese government told South Korea earlier this week that it has no plans to reopen talks with Seoul on the thorny issue of compensation for Korean women forced into sexual slavery for Japan's World War II soldiers, Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday.

The issue resurfaced in South Korea in August when the Constitutional Court ruled it unconstitutional for the Seoul government to make no specific effort to settle the matter with Tokyo. In mid-September, South Korea proposed holding talks with Japan on the issue which has long proved an irritant in relations between the two countries.

But Japan says the issue of financial compensation has been fully resolved.

Shinsuke Sugiyama, director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian affairs bureau, was quoted by Yonhap as saying: "The Japanese government’s consistent position is this: The issue of compensation for the ‘comfort women’ was fully and completely resolved under the normalization treaty."

Historians say more than 200,000 women from Korea and other countries were forced to work as “comfort women” in military brothels used by Japanese troops during the war.

Japan has apologized for the military’s involvement in crimes against the women but insists the offenses were committed privately rather than on behalf of the state.

Don't talks have to be open in the first place for them to be RE-opened later?

Sixty Six years after the war... and after countless Apologies and war reparations... South Korea is out for more and more money. Are the woman themselves pushing this or are their lazy children just looking for another handout.

then the Koreans won't reopen talks with Japan on the rock issue

Wurthington: There has only been one formal apology to SKorea on the issue of colonization and the hardships endured, and even as recently as Abe politicians have denied and tried to rescind it. Instead you have clowns here saying, "It was a good thing for them because it gave them employment", or some such rubbish, with the 'best' argument being, "Well... the imperial troops may have engaged in their services (after Abe tried to deny it), but it was personal and not on behalf of Japan".

That Japan doesn't want to re-open talks is a given -- they might actually have to address the topic instead of waiting for the former sex-slaves to die and hoping the issue will just be forgotten. While both nations can certainly be children, there is ZERO question about who are being the children here.

Yet Japan doesn't accept the DPRK's claim that their abductee issue is fully resolved?

Words like "throw", "stone" and "glass houses" spring immediately to mind.

When Korea was colonizing and sending its Confucius ideas to Japan and its pottery and other cultural aspects, did they not sleep comfortably with the women of the villages they occupied throughout Japan?

soldave: You beat me to it. I was about to say 200,000 women and Japan can not be bothered to with it but talk about the handful of Japanese that NK abducted, and it's a national tragedy.

Give it up South Korea! There is no more money for you! It was settled with the legal government at the time. Time for you to move forward. The undiscovered country is waiting for us to explore.

Soldave,

Well said, unfortunately time and again Japanese people and politicians remind us of how narrow minded they are and how superior they think they are. If it comes to a person from another country wronged by Japan its oh well many sollys and move on. Yet when something happens to Japan or a Japanese look out its a national issue that will never be forgotten. I guess when you are as insulated and xenophobic as the Japanese this is to be expected.

Yuri well said, now next time you are complaining about the US this, US that (during WW2), or your precious little northern territories please remember your statement here.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Ms. Otani is right, the issue was settled in the 1960's, plus the Japanese gov't is now broke, they have no money to give to the Koreans.

Spidapig - Oh my...

Spidapig24, been quieting down my critical America writing. The Neo Russian Empire is something else. Once Putin is President of Russia again, there is no doubt it has become a dictatorship. We need to concentrate on the present leading into the future. It is time to write a wonderful future and I hold out my hand to my Korean cousins. Again the past is done and the future is ours to make.

Thats funny so you can make libelous, borderline racist false statements accusing a nationality of everything from genocide to war crimes. And then because you have quietened down your criticism you expect all to be forgotten.

We need to concentrate on the present leading into the future. It is time to write a wonderful future and I hold out my hand to my Korean cousins. Again the past is done and the future is ours to make.

What a joke, the past is done. A little while ago you where screaming about war crimes committed by the US against the peace loving Japanese some 60 odd years ago. Yet when the Koreans bring up an event that happened at the same time you say the past is done. So your way is if it affects another nation then the past is the past but if it affects Japan the past is still relevant and an issue. Sorry but your track record shows your views on these matters and for you to make a statement like the past is done is a joke and the most hypocritical asinine statement l have ever heard.

poor things ... this is ridiculous.Sue the Japanese government has become a business for Koreans. Japan and the United States lent billions of dollars through imf to help the Asian tigers in 1998. numerous, numerous times to Japan helped the country financially, but as always they are never satisfied, this shows the true face of Koreans.

Spidapig24, you prove my case. What I wrote about with the WWII countries is true. You can check the facts, saying the truth is not libel. So I have turned around in the now and am facing the future. People like you can not forgive the past and are doomed to repeat it. Like Korea, they will bring up the past forever. They teach their children to hate Japanese now even though it was our ancestors. Oh I never said the WWII Japanese were peace loving. What has happened is an event in my life has shifted my focus from the past to the future.

False.

The issue resurfaced in South Korea in August when the Constitutional Court ruled it unconstitutional for the Seoul Government to make no specific effort to settle the matter PERIOD.

In other words, it's up the Korean government to pay compensation to these so-called comfort women.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

S. Korean Authorities set this up as the first hurdle for the new & inexperienced Japanese FM.. Mission accomplished indeed as they have expecting this ( negative) response from Tokyo anyway -- they took a high moral ground & successfully stirred up embarrassments for Japan !

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Why is it that the SKorean people don't demand payment from their own government that setlled everything with Japan on their behalf back in 1965? I suppose for the same reason that 200,000 comfort women is always thrown around but the 240,000 Koreans who served in the Japanese military and made use of those 200,000 comfort women, at a disounted rate no less, are never mention. No, they weren't "slaves" as in "free" they got paid.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

This issue always comes up whenever S. Korean government wants something from Japan. Why is that?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The people of Koreas and oversea Koreans must understand, Japan is using Koreas, causing their miserables and refused to make sincerely apologies! The DPJ is no difference like LDP who were runaway from history disputes! remember those comfort women were kidnapped from thie hom, raped and never paid! The Japanese government ha sinsulted these miserable women were 'prostitutes' which was a terrible insulting and abusing of women! Do you know why Japan always refused to admit their own wrongdoings? Because if Korean comfort women were compensated and those Japanese comfort women shall take law suits to claim for compensations! japn is using ROK as a 'sandbag' to protect herself, she has no will to live with any Korean(regardless north or south) people fairly!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

The issue of compensation for the ‘comfort women’ was fully and completely resolved under the normalization treaty

That was a myth, a liar and deception, instead that was the beginging to solve those crimes issue! If teher were no normalization treaty between two countries, how can the legal processing begins! Dont believes the words from japanese politicians, air the whole world what the Japanese has done and how they are running away from the issue eveeryday, take it to the United Nations and let the world understood whats going on when Japan is seeking a bigger influences in UN! Her charity contributions does not live with what she has done!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

just-a-guy, South Korea wants to be Japan's foe? A neutral Japan that will not allow America to use their bases in Japan to support the south against the north. You understand Korea is not our war, keep pissing Japan off and receive your "reward"

Spidapig24, you prove my case. What I wrote about with the WWII countries is true. You can check the facts, saying the truth is not libel.

Sorry to disagree with you but it has been pointed out to you numerous times by numerous posters that your "FACTS" about WW2 are well just plain wrong. You misrepresent the truth, you misrepresent the numbers and you play down the facts that dont support your argument.

So I have turned around in the now and am facing the future. People like you can not forgive the past and are doomed to repeat it. Like Korea, they will bring up the past forever.

Thats hilarious, who is it that brings up the "was the a bomb a war crime" question every year? Who is it that still goes on about the territories lost during the war? Who is it that brings up the treatment they received from the US during the war? One hint - you and also the Japanese media. Not a month goes by when the J media doesn't drag up something from the 40's and starts harping on about it, and until recently you would jump onboard with your misrepresentations of the facts. So really who brings up the past? Maybe your neighbors and victims bring up the past because you as a nation have not come to grips with it and haven't properly dealt with it. Yes you have apologized, yet you then worship the war criminals, yes you apologized yet you whitewash your history, yes you apologized yet when others mention it you tell them to move on yet you constantly bring the issues of Japans treatment up constantly.

They teach their children to hate Japanese now even though it was our ancestors.

Oh really? And the Japanese teach their children the truth about their ancestors? Having spent time in Korea and been to their museums etc l can tell you they have a much more balanced view than the Japanese. Ask yourself why do your neighbours still hold a grudge after all these years? Why do you think it is the case maybe because you asa nation have not fully accepted what you did and still to this day portray yourselves as the victims.

Oh I never said the WWII Japanese were peace loving.

No? you did describe them as peaceful innocent civilians in another post. Maybe you should read some of your previous posts to see why l think your a hypocrite

What has happened is an event in my life has shifted my focus from the past to the future.

So just because you say times up lets forget everything l said and just focus on the future. So typically Japanese (oh wait your Okinawan arnt you?) Sorry but words and actions once done are there forever and it takes more than oh well lets ignore the past for it to happen

the truth is that Japan does not need friendship nor Chinese or korean.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Let the Japanese people live in peace.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Spidapig24, my ancestors were farmers and fishermen. Those that served were in construction of defenses on Okinawa. I was taught in a school under the US administration of Okinawa. Oh do not know what Japanese were or taught today. Once again I am NOT Japanese but Okinawan. My ancestors did nothing against Korea. Nobody paid the women of Okinawa who got raped by both sides. Again Korea should stop their worship of the past and look toward the future. Time for them to forgive those who trespassed against them.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@issa1: Oh of course the so called 'friendship' is something known as 'rubbish' in equivalent! But japan needs exports market to save her woeful enough economy out of idle, especially after the 311 tsunami. If the 'comfort women of WW2' never settled will kicks off another round of anti-Japanese products in return which is very very hurting to Japanese economy! Is Japan going to lose her oppurtunity for such an issue or she is going to keep stubborn like LDP? I found the DPJ was even more arrogance than LDP! No the comfort women issue was not yet settle, Mr Noda will facing these issue not jiust in South korea but also China!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@issa1:Let the Japanese people live in peace......I absolutely agree this and peace is so valuable after the 311 disaster, this is year is definately not a lucky year for japan! But when did Japan ever giving 'peace' to others? Insulting comfort women were 'Prostitutes' was absolutely outraging!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

just-a-guy, so South Korea is now an ally of China? What about your "friends" the Americans. Who lost over 50,000 of their troops defending your nation? Last time I was in Seoul, they were burning the American flag again. Also the militants have been known to beat up and sometimes kill American troops. Sometimes while they are jogging in the morning. My last word, South Korea is going to have and stop being so 2 faced. Who's side are you on? The "comfort women" need to forgive the Japanese like the people of Okinawa have forgiven the Americans and Japanese. It is this or the hatred will consume the south.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Japan.....involvement in crimes against the women but insists the offenses were committed privately rather than on behalf of the state."

Interesting excuse by the Japanese Govt when more than 200,000 young women forcibly served to 'comfort' ( put it bluntly in more appropriate term as being abducted & raped continuously over years ) the renowed disciplined Japanese soldiers, everyone agreed as comimitted 'privately' ( can't imagine otherwise as 'publicly' though ).. At this massive scale, the crime seemed far more shocking than a handful of abductees retained by North Korea ( do agree fully on the crime committed by NK was terribly serious too ). The point is how the Japan Govt can simply walk away by claiming their innocence ! Keep burying your head(s) in the sand...There is always justice in the heart of everyone !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sorry ladies, but Japan secretly gave your money to some sinister beaurocrats 45 years ago, and did not bother to tell you all those times you filed suit.

I would suggest some certain Japanese and South Korean officials undergo quadruple amputations as punishment, but I think those evil, conniving, thieving bastards are already all dead.

And its hard to believe anyone could say anything remotely supportive of either side's selfish and evil part in keeping these women from their due. Some people truly have no shame whatsoever.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Dodgeball, J-style.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm so very amused by the fact that these women are referred to as "comfort" women. It's like they are cattle, I feel sorry for them. I support the idea that we (humanity) should look towards the future, but to say "the past is the past" is ignorant and naive. People need to learn from their past and consider the feelings of others. This blatant hypocrisy by Japanese politicians once again baffles me of their superiority-victim complex.
