Unforeseen contingencies are also likely to arise.

Of course they are! The military industrial complex is tremendously imaginative and persuasive.

There'll be lots of cushy Amakudari jobs in Marunouchi.

I am happy that Japan should defend US ships carrying Japanese, or shoot down missiles headed for the USA, but I have a lot of problems with things like the Gulf War, Afghanistan, or the mooted military intervention in Syria and possibly the Ukraine. Abe says that Japan will not become involved but the SDF was sent to Iraq (in a non combat role) even under the previous interpretation. If US forces go "to protect the freedom of Ukrainians," Japan will be asked to join in, and might find itself at war with Russia.

"defending a U.S. ship evacuating Japanese nationals"

Im sorry, I dont quite get the logic. Why would a U.S. ship be evacuating only Japanese nationals? Why couldnt Japan evacuate its own nationals? Whats the scenario? The US ship is somehow inferior and requires Japanese security?
