Two former Japanese prime ministers on Tuesday announced that will set up a group to oppose the use of nuclear power in Japan and support anti-nuclear candidates in future elections.
In a challenge to incumbent Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's pro-nuclear power policy, Junichiro Koizumi and Morihiro Hosokawa said their group will hold its inaugural meeting on May 7 to rally anti-nuclear opposition forces and explore ways for Japan to shift away from nuclear energy to renewable energy sources.
Hosokawa ran in the Feb 9 Tokyo gubernatorial election on an anti-nuclear platform, backed by Koizumi.
Hosokawa, 76, said that he believes nuclear power could imperil the fate of the country. Koizumi, 72, surprised the ruling Liberal-Democratic Party with his anti-nuclear switch -- a reversal of his stance when he led the LDP from 2001 to 2006.
