almost there, even if it doesnt get passed this week it eventually will. those that keep preaching the day of armageddon really dont mean much in the end. I celebrate the day Japanese arnt hedl to ransom by big J corporations and can actually chose which products they wish to buy free of insulting high tariffs

The TPP is a bad idea

Everything under the agreement will just go to the cheapest producer, liquidating jobs that exist in the previous countries. Unemployment will go up and those countries will not be able to pay for services because no taxes are being paid. This will liquidate government control and replace it with corporate control.

Any law like those for the environment, health and safety, that potentially ruin corporate profits will go to a corporate tribunal and be dealt with separately from governments who will have no say in the matter.

It's a bad deal is an understatement. It's not a deal, it's a sale

sf2k, actually so far international trade has done pretty good things for the quality of human life, I'm not sure why further free trade will suddenly reverse all of the progress and make everyone miserable. If anything this TPP deal is bad because it is too slow at freeing things up. But that's better than nothing.

@wakarimasen

What's stopping you now? There's half a dozen jeep dealers in the Tokyo area.

With TPP folows mass imigration to Japan. It is the US politicians who wrote the Chigago protocol wich opened up for mass imigration to west. Divide and concor where mass imigrations is a important tool for US Corporations.

Everything under the agreement will just go to the cheapest producer, like it isnt already, aka made in China. the TPP while a huge FTA for the countires involved is meant to counter Chinas economic power. Itll give an advantage to TPP members through 0% or low tariffs. If China wants to join the group theyll have to also follow the rules put in place. China wants to be apart of the TPP much more than you think, but theyll find it hard to open there markets as the TPP requires.

Amari had said the next 24 hours would be a make-or-break period for the talks.

Make or break?

I'm praying for BREAK!

TPP makes money for the 1% at the expense of the 99%.

That's you and me.

It is not difficult to become 1% in Japan because not as many rich people. So join them.

Maybe the talks will fail yet!! Hope springs eternal!

It's cute that you think this comment makes sense.

The TPP is being negotiated by governments and corporate lobby groups but kept secret from the public in all countries. Hands up everyone who believe this being done with best interest of the public as the main priority. If anyone thinks this is wrong, please point to any officially released draft of the TPP.

Apple Inc takes $2 bilion out of Australia, pays $50 milion tax and keeps the profit away from the US so it does not pay tax there. Expect to see many more such deals for the 1% if the TPP is enacted.

Sorry, poor English. I meant,

It is not so difficult to be 1% in Japan as in USA because there are not as many rich people.

It's cute that you think that makes any more sense.

And the problem isn't the language, it's the logic.

You don't need extremely high income in Japan to be 1%, somewhere around 1,500 Man yen a year or up, I heard.

TPP deals done, guess it will be tomorrows news on here.

I also came here as GOGOGO did... looking for some reaction. Anybody who thinks that vested interests love this agreement should look a little closer. Let's all keep in mind that this agreement reduces tariffs, and the interests that will bleat loudest are the ones benefiting most from the status quo.

I have seen Ford Motor's reaction to the deal, which is full of hilarity. They have long held that Japan manipulates its currency to sell cars, and it is the most tired canard I have ever heard.

Point to any place on a time line, and Japanese manufacturers will have higher sales in the US when the yen is low. Fair enough. But you know, the yen is higher now than it was in 1990, and Japanese car sales in the US have gone nowhere but UP for the last 50 years!

But that is by no means the funniest part. Toyota's cars, today, are more US made than US cars are. So this idea that currency plays some magical role in hollowing out Ford's business is ludicrous. Toyota can build better and cheaper cars in the US with US workers than Ford can. If Ford is just stupid, well, ok, but why should US consumers pay for their stupidity?

Finally, do we all really think that Toyota goes to the Ministry of Finance to say, "Gee, can you send the yen to 120 to the dollar, increasing food and energy expenses by billions of dollars a month for every Japanese voter, just so we can sell 2000 more cars in the US this year? Hmmm?" That is a conversation that never took place. I think Ford believes that Japan is, I don't know, Vietnam or North Korea or something.

It makes sense that Ford is opposing the deal. They represent entrenched, vested interests that are not providing value for US consumers, US workers, or US taxpayers. They want LESS competition and higher tariffs. And if they can wave a flag to make their coin, they will do it.
