Man, Fukuda and his crew are just plain old lairs. They are currently working a on bill that would force all gasoline taxes to be used for roads, and only roads, for the next ten years... a direct contradiction to Fukuda's earlier 'commitment' to revise how the taxes were spent.

As I stated yesterday what a brilliant idea to reinstate the tax when gas is already sky high. I don't drive that much but everytime I have to fill up I curse the government and the oil companies greedy pigs all.

"I don't drive that much but everytime I have to fill up"

Get rid of your car and you won't have to fill up.

I heard people are buying gasoline drainers that sucks fuel from other cars into a portable tank.

  • Sarge at 11:22 PM JST - 30th April

888 - Guess that's OK as long as the people using the gas drainers have permission to suck gas from the owners of the cars they're sucking the gas from ha ha ha

Obviously a lot of you live in the big city, where public transportation is readily available. But if you live in one of the many smaller cities that Japan is desperately trying to depopulate, then unfortunately we don't have such conveniences as you do, and a car is necessary. The strange thing is that the stupid tax is for more road construction in the countryside, which is quickly becoming depopulated. I guess the roads can help drive people out faster.

hachmike66...sorry, but just what part of Japan are YOU living in? "if you live in one of the many smaller cities that Japan is desperately trying to depopulate"...what a load of twaddle! I've never heard such crap in all my life!!

No, wait that would be your next statement..."The strange thing is that the stupid tax is for more road construction in the countryside, which is quickly becoming depopulated. I guess the roads can help drive people out faster."

I live in the countryside mate, and have done for nine years, and I don't see a 'depopulation' move at all. Complete GARBAGE!

Anyway, I just returned home from the pub, and every single gasoline stand has queues a mile long as folks try to get that extra gasoline in while they can. The one downside is, the gas stations are going to lose out big time next month with the price hikes.

Interestingly enough, when you think how much profit the gasoline manufacturers are making from all this, you have to wonder why prices are still so high. Bit of a flashback to the 1972 oil crisis don't ya think?

hachmike...stay away from talking politics, until you know what you're talking about!

Nice to have the tax restored just before the whole country goes on holiday. What a coinkidink, eh?

  • presidentbaka at 11:37 PM JST - 30th April

lipscombe...obviously you live in an area where public transportation is rife...a lot of us however, do not. I have a big car, I LOVE IT, it's a guzzler but not only does it look cool, the ladies love it, it brings me business and I'm making more than enough money from my web building business to pay for gas when I need it, without thinking of the cost. Oh, and before anyone says anything, my car is green as can be!!

  • GenkiDesuKa at 11:39 PM JST - 30th April

President: I don't think hachmike is saying there is an actual stated policy of depopulation, but, to say that their has not been a continual movement of people from the countryside to the city is incorrect as well.

And, the fact that you see lines at gas stations proves the point that, unlike what some people here have stated, for anyone in Japan outside the center cities, a car is a necessity.

I guess because of timing the LDP didn't have a choice of when to hold this vote, but, to reinstate this new tax right before golden week seems political suicide to me.

    > personally I never get in a car and try to stay out of the whole shameful charade, for MOST (i.e. more than 50%, dont give me no crap about living an hour from the station or working for juroneko) people in japan, or elsewhere for that matter, cars are unnecessary. only greedy/keep up with the Jones'/people with small willies have the real need to have one

get rid of the car, and ride the stinky, overcrowded, slow, and expensive trains, that don't run 24 hours. Come on please. A car is freedom. Freedom to go where ever and when ever you want. It opens up parts of Japan that people never go. Had a friend that lived only 5 mins from a super cheap shop but because the train station is in the opposite direction, he never knew it was there. I, who have a car, drove past it and showed it to him later. Now he saves a ton of cash, because people DRIVE.

If the government tried to charge (4 liters to 1 gallon) $1.20 USD over night in tax, there would be WAR in America.

But Japanese people are weak. They will take it. Because for the most part Japanese have too much money anyway.

P.s People who say you don't need a car, are simply living in their own small world where trains and taxi's support their every move. I prefer to be in control of my life and not leave it up to someone else.

"expensive trains" ... can't agree with that part of your argument. ..Compared to where?? I always thought they were cheap.
