    Anyone not familiar with this situation, I encourage you to take a little time looking at Google earth or even GoogleMaps of the islands in question. They are within bridge building distance of Hokkaido, and upon zooming in, some of them have small towns but are littered with decades of former Soviet trash, rusty ships, tanks, etc. It's really sad that the islands have not been turned back over to Japan many years ago.
