Funny that it's okay for a Japanese politician to pay respect to US war dead, but if he tries to pay respect to his own country's war dead everyone has a hissy fit.

papasmurfinjapan: You're oversimplfying. If he were paying respect for the US war dead and for some reason a war criminal like Hitler were buried side-by-side, you could make the comparison.
Anyway, good on Maehara. For once he's doing something decent. I just hope he kept his mouth closed and didn't say anything stupid.

Next Hillary can visit Yasukuni to return the gesture.

Let me guess, because so many convicted war criminals are enshrined at the Honolulu site?

Yeah I know I'm oversimplifying, but if they "moved" the war criminals to another shrine do you think China and Korea would stop complaining if politicians visited Yasukuni to pay respect to their non-criminal war dead? Perhaps they would, but my hunch is no...

A segment of the Chinese,Korean and other populations that are vehemently anti-japan hardly constitutes "everyone". The vast majority of the people on this planet, even in tghose counties have better things to worry sbout and couldn'r care less.

How about US leaders need to do this for Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Ambassador Roos was there in August, bowing and signing the guest book. There is talk that Obama might visit when he comes to Japan in November. Paying respect, not apologising, I hope. Or maybe Michelle can wear a fancy dress and take the kids on a day trip to Hiroshima, I think Japanese would appreciate that more. Oh and hope she says "Oishi!" when they try the delicious okonomiyaki there.
They will need another nice vacation after what is going to happen Nov 2. Good to see Hillary making friends too.

Maehara visiting the cemetery is insignificant and not worth harping about since all foreign ministers and heads of state visit Arlington, etc.

The more interesting point all of you are missing is the base relocation issue being discussed. I think that this is being done so Obama does not hear "Trust me" again in a meeting with a Japanese head of state.
