That rabid anti-US racist? I am sure the only reason he is attending is to rub the US's nose in 'how violent' it is.

The man is physically incapable of staying out of the spotlight. Usually it's some 'anti-Zionist' conference or other, though.

If Mahathir is there, I definitely won't be going then.

“There is no record of any figure who has served as president or prime minister abroad having attended the ceremony.

Because that little show was unwelcome from the world, it's glorifying Japan was was an obbressor!

What eco politico clout does he still exercise to merit VIP treatment?

I have looked into his bio - PM of Malaysia for 20+ years, headed the OIC (http://www.oic-oci.org/), affected the course of economic history w/ his intervention in the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis (to what degree will be determined in the future), and accumulated MANY VIP friends in the developing countries, etc....

His visit to Hiroshima is significant, but observers would need to know his connections.

He also has a foreboding nickname, "Doctor M".

He's also one of the world's leading anti-Semites, as well as someone who pushed a mini-Apartheid system in Malaysia for his 20+ years in office. He also chaired the Saddam Hussein defense committee. Not exactly the sort of chap to be welcomed with open arms, no matter how many tin-pot dictators and bigots he's friends with.
