Keiko Chiba is as close to a bleeding heart liberal as you'll get in Japan. It's quite amusing watching the "send em' to the chair!111" hardliners splutter in outrage.
Another nanny state in the making. While in reality Japanese people these days tend to be childish, petty and mature rather slowly, reducing the legal adult age would force young people to accept personal legal responsibility.
I always appreciated the sense of a national coming of age party, seijin shiki, and it is unlikely to make any sense to change it as it would no longer have any meaning. When the trend is to live with your parents anyway well into adulthood, it flies in the face of reason to reduce the age. If it's not working at 20, it won't work any better at 18.

Why not raise the age to reflect reality?

Reduce the age of adulthood? As plastic monkey points out, if anything the age of adulthood should be raised in this country.

What is the problem with this one? Most civilised countries in this world consider 16 is the age where someone becomes responsible for their actions.

Age of adults here should be about 47 from the way I am thinking. My wife has two more years to go...can she do it? Nah
