buggerlugs, I couldn't agree with you more. I can't help but think what how dim the future is instore for Japan with a government that just is either oblivious to what is happening or simply pure imcompetence.
What needs to be done is some serious soul searching and active long term policies that will make Japan viable again. Japan seems to be going nowhere. We all know about the declining birth rate, aging population, low productivity of workforce, and yet nothing seems to be done about it.
This was invitable. It needs to be done to offset the other reductions they have promised. Free highways and increased family allowances are enough to warrant this increase. It was blatantly obvious from the outset of the new government's policies that they would have to rob Peter to pay Paul. There was no way they could cover the costs of their sweeping reforms without taxing the populas to pay for it.
Pension here sucks. Will the raise in tax raise what my benefits will be? NO! It is set from how it is taken out from my employer. I will be on Japanese welfare when I am 65
Stupid, that'll send the economy even futher down. Just look at the uk you idiot in power.
We haven't increased VAT for a long time. And most economists agree that if you want to increase revenue without hitting the economy it has to be a sales tax hike.
Ironic the DPJ screamed at the LDP about being honest for the need to increase the sales tax. Now they're in power the DPJ can afford to stop lying.
No sales tax hike before the promised elimination of wasting tax money has been accomplished. Without the latter the DPJ has no credibility whatsoever.
A sales tax increase will not only stagnate economic activity and growth, but will result in a delay in any future economic recovery. The 60% of DPJ lawmakers need to do their homework and keep their mouths shut on issues they have no clue about.
There should be ZERO consumption taxes on food and rent. There are going to be lots more poor Japanese, so they might as well revise the system to give them a break.

I thought the DPJ lawmakers were cutting unneccesary spending to avoid increasing the consumption taxes.

Well, they can't raise it for 4 years unless their leader breaks his promise.
