Noda decides against running for president of opposition DPJ

TOKYO —

Yoshihiko Noda, chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan’s Public Relations Committee, has decided against running in the party’s September presidential election. This raises the prospect that the current leader, Ichiro Ozawa, will be elected unopposed.

Noda, widely thought to be preparing for the race, told reporters in Tokyo, ‘‘Circumstances, judged comprehensively, do not warrant a challenge. There were strong voices calling on me to be prudent and exercise self-restraint.’’
